I?m an intensive care specialist in a small city.
Coronavirus isn?t just like the flu, but it?s only really very dangerous to the elderly or the already unwell. Quite a lot of people in their 80s will die, but most of the rest of us will probably be okay.
If you?re in your 70s and you get Coronavirus, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
If you?re in your 60s and you have a heart attack, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
If you?re in your 50s and need bowel cancer surgery, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
If you?re in your 40s and have a bad car accident, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
If you?re in your 30s and have terrible pre-eclampsia as a complication of pregnancy, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
If you?re in your 20s and have a bad reaction to a party drug, you?ve got a really good chance of survival. If I?ve got a bed for you.
I have 7 beds equipped with life support machines. We have a plan to increase to about 25. Getting more isn?t a matter or more equipment or more money, that bit is easy. There are not enough skilled staff, even if we all work double shifts every day for six months (and we probably will).
If 50% of my city gets infected, that?s 75,000 people. If 5% of them need life support (which is the estimate), that?s 3750 people. For 25 beds.
And then I might not have a bed for you.
So it?s up to you to flatten the curve. Wash your hands. Stay home.

That's not a reasonable option when you're a business owner. The funny thing about this is now that everyone is home I'm getting a lot of calls for residential estimates, many of which were "just curious how all that worked and such". They were never going to sign the line but just wanted something to do so they wasted my time.

I heard a very good point today.

Jim Cramer said people 70+ are the ones most in danger, so have them shelter in place, and let everyone else go about business.

I understand. It was just a copy and paste mainly directed to those that don't GAF and think just because they won't be in danger if they contract the virus, it's still smart to be reasonable so not to spread this shit around. It IS real and NOT a HOAX like some still believe. Everybody still has necessary things they have to do whether it be work or getting groceries. I don't see anything wrong with outdoor activities either. Just be smart about it. Going to casinos might be the most ridiculous thing people can do now but people are still doing it.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Young ones spread it to old ones. Keep down infection rate of young ones, ya slow infection rate in Old ones so hospitals not get suddenly overwhelmed... In Italy hospitals had to ration ICU beds, had to decide which folks to try and save, which folks let die...

First place for this to start in US is NY..

Cramer is good informed source for infectious disease information and opinions. I'm gonna ask my doctor for stock tips.

You dont need to be an auto mechanic to recognize a flat tire.

Or, keep the old ones sequestered.

As a Medical Sales rep, the people in the Labs are all petrified yet doing their jobs. Older Lab techs not allowed to be in because of the threat to people in their sixties.

Young people working while older people steer clear? What a great idea!

Cramer doesnt sound so fucking dumb after all, huh?

Oh, I almost forgot.....

These people are not helping. When people don't cooperate is when they have to force us to stay home. We don't want that. Jesus people.

Your ignoring me sure isn't working out too well for you there, is it Mr. Happy? Cramer said 70's stay in place and let EVERYONE else go about business. Brilliant idea, just brilliant. You would make a great President with that plan.

My comment was aimed at large teaching institutions. In smalltown USA, no choices but for older Med techs to do their jobs, its all they have, and put on their PPE. Look at your local hospitals at Med techs. Average age across the board in the country is 60, so when older techs start retiring, Labs will need a lot of help.
