Double Trouble?
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
Another week in the NFL, another handful of double-digit favorites. Despite the NFL?s obsession with parity, the season of the ?big chalk? rolls on. Last week, bettors who backed the biggest favorites had a profitable 4-1 run (as the Jaguars, Packers, Patriots and Colts all won and covered).
Looking at the lineup for Week 15, there are six double digit favorites on the board. From the early betting action numbers, if these favorites don?t have another big weekend, it could spell for trouble for bettors, who are heavily lining up behind four of the six.
Let?s break the games down and see where the money is going.
New York Jets at New England Patriots
The second act of the Spygate saga takes place this Sunday when NY Jets head coach Eric Mangini and his crew travel to Gillette Field to battle former boss Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots amidst more espionage drama.
Earlier in the season when the Pats and Jets met in New York, Mangini?s team blew the whistle on a member of the Patriots organization trying to record footage of the Jets for the purposes of stealing signals and a crap storm ensued.
Going into this week?s game the shoe was on the other foot when the Jets were allegedly caught videotaping. New York said they received permission and the drama continues.
As it stands the Jets are 3-10 SU and 4-8-1 ATS while the Pats are 13-0 SU and 10-3 ATS.
There is a lot of animosity between the two coaches and seeing as Belichick?s team is both undefeated and more talented; many are predicting a butt kicking of epic proportions as the Pats are listed as a 23?-point favorite.
The last time the Pats were a favorite in this range they failed to cash in. As a 24-point chalk against the Philadelphia Eagles, New England only won by a field goal racking up its second ATS loss of the season.
SPORTSBETTING.COM bettors are a little wary of the steep line in this matchup, as only 55% of the action is going New England?s way.
Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Have the Atlanta Falcons hit rock bottom yet? Maybe, maybe not.
Backers and fans of the team probably thought that rock bottom was losing QB Michael Vick to charges of animal cruelty, possibly forever, and subsequently going 3-10 and 6-7 ATS.
Well the floor gave way again when head coach Bobby Petrino quit the team to join the Arkansas NCAA program, informing the team via a letter, much to the anger of owner Arthur Blank and the rest of the team.
Will interim head coach Emmitt Thomas be able to lead the team through the final games of a miserable season and even a payday this week against Tampa Bay?
The betting public appears to have very little confidence in Atlanta?s ability to compete, as only 15% of the action is on them as a +13? dog, while the Bucs are seeing 85% of the volume.
Indianapolis Colts at Oakland Raiders
Although the Oakland Raiders are 4-9 straight up (5-8 ATS) this season, they are miles ahead of the team that took to the field last year, as that team finished 2-14 (6-10 ATS).
The team has doubled its regular season win total and is on pace to better its ATS numbers as well, but despite the improved play, the Raiders are still a team in serious rebuilding mode.
The Colts are feeling heat from the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South lead but Indy is up two games and a game against Oakland should add to that lead.
SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Colts listed as the 10?-point road fav and the betting public is wagering on Indy at an 85% clip.
Detroit Lions at San Diego Chargers
It really looked like the Detroit Lions had turned things around earlier in the season.
In November, Detroit was a very respectable 6-2 SU (5-2-1 ATS) and looked like they would push Green Bay for the NFC North division lead, but just like a lead zeppelin (not the band) the Lions have plummeted back to earth dropping their last five SU and going 1-4 ATS.
Still alive but badly needing to get back on track in a hurry, last week?s game against the Cowboys, where Detroit lost 28-27 thanks to a last minute TD pass, cost the Lions a potentially season saving win (although Lion-backers cashed a ticket as they were big dogs).
The Lions will be hard pressed again this week to pull off a straight up win against a San Diego Chargers team that has rattled off three in a row both SU and ATS. But the betting public likes them as a 10-point underdog, feeling they can hang in there with the Chargers. Detroit is receiving 60% of all the wagering volume in this matchup.
Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys
The Eagles are on life support in the playoff race and if they want to have any hope of making it to the post season they will have to run the table.
They?ll be in tough this weekend as they face NFC best Dallas with its 12-1 record straight up and 9-4 record ATS.
The Cowboys covered as a 3-point favorite in a 38-17 win in their last meeting with Philadelphia and this time around Big D is favored by 10-points with a 90% majority of the bets going to Dallas.
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings
What a difference a year makes. Last year the Chicago Bears were looking to clinch home field advantage for the entire NFC playoffs.
This year, much like the Eagles, the Bears will have to win out the rest of their games if they want a shot at the post season and also like Philly, will face a hot division rival this week.
While not nearly as potent as Dallas, the Minnesota Vikings seem to be a team that is getting hot at the right time going 4-0 SU and ATS in their last four.
The players at SPORTSBETTING.COM like what they see with this Viking team right now, as they are backing the 10-point favorite at a clip of 80%.
Good luck this week.
