Looking for information about Drones with camera for a x-mas gift for our son....He's a freshman in college studying communication and has full use of state of the art cameras, audio and editing equipement ect at his school? The one thing he hasn't mentioned is the use of Drones...

I'm seeing them online at very reasonable prices and I'm sure he'd get a lot of use having one... Any info on brands, accessories, flying range, pitfalls ect would be appreciated....We are in an area with extreme cold and winds at times if any of that comes into play with a particular brand or style....

Wind affects them all, larger ones less than smaller ones. Technology is a plus with these things. My son and I both have one and I don't regret buying either one.

I know most kids have a smartphone these days but FYI, one is required to fly a drone.

Anything by DJI is great. My son has a Phantom 3 which is a bit on the larger size and scares me a little if it were to crash it could seriously injure someone. Mine is a DJI Mavic which is much smaller (but could still hurt someone) and can be flown indoors if you have a little bit of room.

Do you just want to fly line of sight and take video or do you like the idea of flying what's called FPV (first person view) where you can get a set of goggles and fly as if you are in the cockpit? These all have a return to home feature so if you fly it off somewhere and lose sight of it you can press a button and it returns to where you launched it so FPV is pretty fun.

It all comes down to what you want it to do and how much you want to spend. This is one item where the more you spend the more you get, within reason.
