How do you folks determine when a drop in class gives the horse 'an edge' or the drop is in reality because the horse isn't that good?

Also, given that I've been watching Beulah/Thistle a lot lately (I know, I know), wouldn't a player be wise to play examine overlays on a regular basis, since it seems often there are several contenders in a race, especially at tracks with small purses like Beulah?

When the horse has shown competitiveness in its current class or some success in lower class in previous starts. The tough case is taking a horse rising unless it shows something extraordinary.

P.S. Always be wary of a horse doing well in a certain class and taking a huge drop. The owner is usually dumping....figured this one out the hard way a few times.

Though I have not picked up a thistle/ beulah PP for some time now, I have usually found that a sharp class jumper is much more attractive than a dull class dropper on this circuit.

As the season winds down however, some trainers will drop a horse in decent form just to pick up a check before turning the horse out for the winter.

I would also advise to search now for Mountineer shippers. That track is dark until after Christmas and some moderatly sharp shippers may invade to find the winners circle at Grove City.

Agree w/Alb on this. Horses in good form who are now dropping in class usually have some health issues. If you had a sharp $12500 claimer would you run him for $6250? You may win the purse but lose the horse via the claim box at a level lower than the horses true worth. Small drops (1 level) can be good, especially if the horse has decent speed.
