Not your typical war movie. That said the Mrs and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The movie was very well done depicting the anguish of 400,000 men retreating to Dunkirk beach for a warship pickup that never comes. One of the best movies we have seen this year.

Just saw Dunkirk...best movie I've seen in years. } no spoiler alert in the 1st paragraph}..just as good as Saving Private Ryan.....what Nolan did as the director was amazing....I like what Kenneth Baugh{ played the navy admiral] said about Nolan...." "at no time throughout the movie did the audience have time to think, only had time to feel and react....just like the characters in the movie...the intense action in the air,on boats and on the beach have you sitting on the edge....the intense action, sound and music score are unreal....the scenes in the destroyer,in the spitfires are so real..you are there....water is rushing in the compartment on the destroyer...there are 2 Messerschmidt's shooting at you at 5,000 feet....and you laying on the beach with no cover on the beach as German planes are just shooting everyone...this movie will win 8 or 9 academy awards....acting,movie score,cinematography,sound,etc.....being a history teacher and knowing this story made it even better...Nolan stuck to the facts about how 350,000 soldiers escaped....Nolan was criticized by the French last week when the movie opened.....I will leave some space here for some spoilers.....I will point out a few things that you probably missed watching the movie...it made the movie even more interesting when you see this because we all missed it.... I think....

Spoiler alert..do not read this unless you saw the movie..also do not post something responding to the spoiler alert unless you give warning...

the movie opens up with English soldiers reading German pamphlets..." here are you, here are we" ... and that is the whole theme..how do we survive....this isn't Saving Private Ryan because there is no blood...I'm not sure if any of you picked up on that....there might of been a quick shot of blood here or there but not blood and guts...Nolan did that on purpose...and he even got a PG rating instead of an R... I know when i bought my ticket I never noticed it was PG...don't think any of you either...and the one thing I never noticed until after reading a review....you never ever see a German soldier...or soldiers faces...or the German army surrounding Dunkirk...until the very end..last scene...and the German's face you see for a glimpse is fuzzy..all the dog fights...you only see the English pilots face in the cockpits..never even get close to a German pilot although you see the plane right up front....i never noticed there was no blood and never saw the Germans..until Tom Hardy's spitfires glides down on the beach....and then for 3 seconds at the very end of the movie we finally see a German face....and then the movies over...Nolan did this on purpose...anyway I really enjoyed the movie....

I forgot...the French are upset at Nolan..they didn't feel the French were portrayed enough....maybe so....almost 35,000 french escaped after the british evacuated the beaches...but over 35-40,000 french defended the perimeter keeping the Germans at bay while the boats took everyone back....all those French became prisoners of war defending Dunkirk....think they wanted Nolan to acknowledge that more...not sure.. I do know one English critic responded to the French ...." when you make a french movie about Dunkirk you can include that"... and lets not forget.....a few weeks after Dunkirk,Hitlers army marched into Paris...

I like Box, but Box and one is way off here. Saving Private Ryan is way way way way way way way better then Dunkirk, I mean there isn't even a comparison there.

Dunkirk was an ok flick, pretty slow moving actually, not a bad flick by any means, an average flick at best. For anyone to even compare it to Saving Private Ryan is laughable.

6.6 outta 10 for kickserv

Maybe you just didn't get Dunkirk? Either way, you just can't tell somebody their opinion on a movie is wrong. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. if you didn't like the movie that's fine, but you can't tell someone else they're wrong for liking it.
