Its Japanese Tour Time, unfortunately now, because more Japanese tour players are well known around the world, there is not so much value about as in previous years - 2 picks for me
Teshima - last 4 results are 1/c/9/2 - picked purely on that form and the fact that Stan James only quote 20/1 - Coral go 40
Dean Wilson - an American player who played on the Asian Tour until joining the Japanese tour last year - he won in his rookie year and this year has consolidated with 3 victories (the latest last week) and 3 other top 4's from 19 starts - 33/1 is the general price available

Books to so far price up include, Betsmart, Coral, Ladbrokes, Hills, SportingBet, MultiSports, Stan James, Bet365

Coral are just about the shrewdest in the UK when it comes to US and Euro books, but for some reason their grip of other tours is poor. The 25/1 about Tanaka has prompted me to pull on the off-season betting boots! He's 12/1 with Multisports.
Izawa is a rock-solid favourite (excepting DD of course) at 11/1 with Hills and I wopuldn't put anybody off Katayama.

Clive,
Have to agree with you on 2 counts...
Coral seem to be over generous in Japan (should we point it out to them though!) last year in the Taheiyo Masters I got 50/1 Toshimitsu Izawa with them.
Speaking of Izawa the 11/1 at Hills does look good. He has 3 top 10's in his last 4 visits here. His Nissan 2nd & US Masters 4th also look good in this field. He also well clear in the Japanese Order of Merit, even though he has only played 15 events.

Must admit I have a soft spot for Toshi..
In 1998 I had Brian Watts at 25/1 in the Casio and Toshi somehow managed to lose the playoff against him. Best part of it that I had Watts doubled with Stephen Leaney at 33/1 and he won the Australian Players also in a playoff with Corey Pavin.... after one-putting 7 of the last 9 holes... was my luck in that weekend! "the stuff that dreams are made of"

Preview & outright plays:

Rather surprised by the widespread bookie coverage of this event, so this a belated preview. This is Japan's premier golf tournament and usually attracts a strong international field who usually play well. Shingo Katayama held off a strong challenge from Bob May and Darren Clarke last year, but he was the first home winner since Jumbo Ozaki in 1996. The winners in the interim had been Tom Watson, Lee Westwood and Thomas Bjorn. With the WGC World Cup being held in Japan next week, David Duval is in the field, as are a few internationals, though with the event coinciding with the Volvo Masters and with fears heightened over flying, there are less than in previous years.

They play at the Phoenix Country Club which has been the host for this event since its inaugural year in 1974. This is a seaside course and so is subject to the sea winds, but it does not border the water. Rather, it is a rather tight tree-lined course with rewards for attacking golf. The penalties are severe though and so they should as the par-71 course is only 6,856 yards long. A good test of golf that usually separates the wheat from the chaff, it has been listed among the 'world's top 100 courses'.

Duval justifiably heads the markets, but given the stresses on both PGA Tour events last week, he and others such as Gossett and Kelly are passed over. Instead the three selections are Toshimitsu Izawa, Hidemichi Tanaka and Ed Fryatt. Izawa is totally dominant on the Japan Tour at the moment. He has won four of his last six events and finished 3rd in one other. In those six tournaments, he has recorded just one round over par. With an inflated price because of Duval, he warrants attention particularly with the safety net of an each-way play.

Both Izawa and Tanaka skipped the Ube Kosan Open last week and are fresh coming into this event. Tanaka may not have the form of Izawa, but has won twice this year already and has finished 4th and 2nd in his last two events. With top-10 finishes in two of the last three years, he looks like a decent proposition for a place finish, particularly with Eurobet who offer 5 places and a vastly different price to the 16/1 generally available on him.

With regard to current form, then Fryatt does not appear to a valid selection. He has missed his last four cuts on the PGA Tour, but crucially he did not need to tough it out in Annandale last week as he had already secured his card for next season with a run of five top-15 finishes in July/August. It can also be noted that he was in much the same form last season - a best of 55th in his previous eight PGA Tour events - before he finished 7th in this event and 12th in Casio World Open. Fresh off a week's rest and with a good record in Japan, he may surprise a few people again this week. The 66/1 at Bet365 is tempting, but they offer only 4 places, so the safer play at NetBetSports who offer 6 places looks more justifiable with this type of player.

Outright plays:

Toshimitsu Izawa to win 10/1 e.w. @ NetBetSports [6 places]
Hidemichi Tanaka to win 25/1 e.w. @ Eurobet [5 places]
Ed Fryatt to win 40/1 e.w. @ NetBetSportss [6 places]

Interesting going into final round - have
Teshima t3rd
Wilson 5th
Laycock t9th (not bad from t55th after round 1)
Can't see anyone beating Duval but 3 places would be nice

More Padraig points for me - Teshima lost in a play-off to Duval, Laycock finished t3rd and Wilson birdied the last to scrape into a 4 way tie for 5th, can we have more betting on the Japanese tour please

Unlucky pal... close but no cigar.
I stiffed him for you taking the 16/1 e/w after the 2nd round.
Just out of interest.. where did you find he had lost the play-off?
I was full of hope... until I saw the picture of Duval holding a trophy on the jtgo homepage.

I must be an optimist... I was hoping the scoreboard was just set-up that way and Duval "lst" had something to do with the alphabet....
I cut and just pasted the link without the scoreboard bit on the end.. and then saw Duval clutching a trophy... even then I hoped it was an old one
... it's only money!

Final update: 0-3 and -3.00 units

Duval won the event, but he showed just how beatable he was as well. Unfortunately none of the selections were around to exploit his faltering finish. Izawa and Tanaka finished 12th and were rarely placed any higher, though at least Fryatt did have his chances. In the top-5 after both of the opening rounds, he shot 73-76 over the weekend to tumble to 32nd

Nice week Ian
