I took Herron last week when he finished in a 3-way tie for 4th place at the Booze Allen Classic. He was 25-1 to win, which means he'd be 6.25-1 to place in top 4. Shouldn't the correct payoff be in the vicinity of 4-1 (25 divided by 6)? I got 2.08-1.

I presume you only had 4 places on your each-way ticket. In which case, you won the place part @ 6.25/1, but with a three-way tie for the fourth (and last) position in the top-4, you were paid out to a third of your stake.

So, if you placed 3 units to win @ 25/1 and 3 units to place (top-4) @ 6.25, your winnings would be 1*6.25 +1 (the latter part is your returned 1/3 place stake).

i don't understand why it would be 25/1 divided by 4 (for each place it pays), then divided by 3 (for each player in the tie). Why not just 25/1 divided by 6 (the number of players in the top 4)?

Also, does it matter that it was a tie for 4th place and not for 2nd? What if Herron finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd?

It is divided by three because three people shared the fourth and last place position.

It would be grossly unfair if you picked the winner and your each-way payout was reduced because 5 people shared 4th place, all of whom your player has beaten.
