Fresno State senior center Melvin Ely has been cleared to play Tuesday against San Francisco after being cleared by the NCAA for allegedly accepting an extra benefit, Bulldogs coach Jerry Tarkanian told ESPN.com.
Ely missed two games last weekend against UC Riverside and Air Force while Fresno State (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) and the NCAA investigated whether or not he stayed in a room paid for by an agent last spring in a predraft workout in Las Vegas. Ely denied that Franchise Sports America paid for his room. Ely thought about it but then decided not to declare for the NBA draft.
Ely, the Bulldogs' leading scorer and rebounder, voluntarily removed himself from competition until the matter was resolved.
The returning Western Athletic Conference player of the year, Ely is averaging 18.4 points and 9.4 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
