England is a -250 favorite over USA for the opener, with the Americans at +650. A tie comes in at +325 and the total is 2 ?-goals.
England is trying to win its first World Cup since 1966. Its best finish since then was a 4th in 1990. This country has experienced a lot of heartbreaks at the World Cup. Losing on penalty kicks is nothing new to them, and it happened again against Portugal in 2006.
However, oddsmakers are again high on their chances. England is +500 to win the title, with only Spain (+350) and Brazil (+400) listed above them. The next five on the list are Argentina (+600), Netherlands (+900), Italy (+1000), Germany (+1100) and France (+1250).
Star players are what make England tick. David Beckham was the big name in the last three World Cups. He would have become his country?s first player to play in four, but was derailed by an Achilles injury.
Beckham would have been just a bit player anyhow. The new star is forward Wayne Rooney, who put up over 30 goals this year for famed Manchester United. He?s battled injury problems of his own, but he must put the ball in the net for England to win the tournament.
Coach Fabio Capello is coaching his first World Cup for England. He?s been a star in Italy as both a player and a coach, and has brought good energy to the process.
USA shocked the world in 2002 by going to the World Cup quarterfinals. They then put up a fight against powerful Germany before losing 1-0.
USA had a disappointing result in 2006, losing to Ghana and the Czech Republic, while surprising tying eventual champion Italy. They did not advance.
A runner-up spot at the 2009 Confederations Cup has cause for much more optimism this time around.
Note that England is the heavy -333 favorite to win Group C. USA is +420 with Slovenia +1000 and Algeria +1400. This is considered an easy grouping for England, and USA should advance to the second round as well.
