Ernie Accorsi, GM of the New York Giants
was offered a draft day trade while the G-Men were on the
clock, to move from 4th to 7th so Cleveland could move
up to grab Sean Taylor. Instead NY gave up mega picks
to swap Rivers for Manning.

Accorsi could have made a LEGENDARY move
if he had the patience to trade down with Cleveland,
grab a boatload of picks (which Clev eventually gave to Detroit),
and take Phillip Rivers with the 7th pick. It would have
been a near lock that Rivers would be on the board after
Washington and Detroit had made their selections. Then he could
have dumped Rivers along with the "boatload" he had acquired
from the Browns, for Eli Manning.

Ernie Accorsi - What were you thinking ?

Accorsi was burned years earlier when he was the general manager ( I forgot which team) and he picked Elway. But Elway said he would play baseball and not play for Accorsi's team.

Accorsi kept trying to put a deal to sign Elway, but the owner made a deal with Denver without confering with Accorsi. He was pissed. He vowed to never let it happen again.

This time a POSSIBLY great QB wanted to play on his team. He would not let this one get away, no matter what.

THE PROBLEM:

Usually the first pick is enticed to agree to terms before the draft.
This is a disaster. No only have they not even started to talk terms after the draft, but they fired the veteran starter and gave Manning the starting job already. Now he has all the leverage. QB Vick signed with Atlanta for 62 million / seven year contract four years ago. Manning will want much, much more now. I wouldn't be surprised if he asked for 100 million for 7 years. That will bend the Giants salary cap for a decade.

We are probably talking HOLD-OUT.

Jesse Palmer could be the starting QB for the Giants.
This could make the Ryan Leaf draft pick look real good in comparison.
