Larry Nelson 14/1 Stan James 2EW + 2W
It beggars belief how they can put Nelson up at 14/1. He has won this event for the last 2 years and last time out finished 2nd in the TD Waterhouse and the week before 3rd in the Brunos Memorial Classic - and these were much higher quality fields than on offer this week. Missing from this event are Irwin, Kite, Watson, Leitzke, etc. Add to this the fact that some of the usually more reliable players, Tewell & Gilder, have also disappointed of late and we have the makings of a good thing.

Outright plays (2 units):

Larry Nelson to win 14/1 e.w. @ Stan James
No Irwin, Watson, Kite, Lietzke or Fleisher and the odds look very short this week. One exception though is Stan James' offering for Nelson; at least double the odds elsewhere. Has won this event for the last two years and has finished 3rd and 2nd in his last two events, the latter time as a 20/1 selection and with the last round cancelled because of bad weather. That makes two events out of four that I have backed the defending champion. Not usually a good play, but the fields in the Seniors and LPGA events are particularly thin this week.

Jim Thorpe to win 14/1 e.w. @ Bet365
I must be a very forgiving person to back Thorpe again. Four weeks ago he defeated Jacobs - an unofficial 66/1 selection - in a playoff to win the Tradition and last week, as a 20/1 selection, he lost his game completely on Sunday when he had been leading the event. With top-3 finishes on both his previous starts on this course, I'll give him another chance.

Sammy Rachels to win 28/1 e.w. @ Surrey
Three weeks too late for backing Rachels - he won Bruno's Memorial Classic at 125/1 that week - but he finished in the top-10 the following week and stands a decent chance against this field. A poor performance on this course last week, but he was not in the best of form at the time. A good price for a player who won twice in his debut year and has won once already this season.

Don't know if it's still available, but SJs 125/1 Hatalsky has to be the bet of the year so far! A genuine contender on this tour, he should be about 33/1

Also..

Been waiting for Jay Overton to get a senior tour start for some time...he will be really motivated to win his card here, was 100/1 earlier, impressive on his other starts, he also played well here last year...

This is the sort of opportunity that the hours of boring homework aim for....all they have to do now is win!

Clive I have met Morris several times as he is good friends with a friend of mind that use to play on Hooters Tour years ago. He is a genuine fine fellow and I hope you are correct about him on Beards tour.He has struggled all his life on PGA and has never given up.

Noticing Hatalsky's run of top 20's when I backed Nelson on Tuesday night I asked S James for a price on him but they couldn't find one.... so my lack of a bet might aid his chances.

I noticed in the Racing Post recently S James were advertising for a new Golf Odds Compiler... I hope you sharks feel guilty... those fancy prices you got about Quigley, Tewell, etc earlier on have seen some poor sod's head roll.....

Clive you're 'darn South'.... why don't you apply for the job? If you get it you could lay us some generous prices for a few weeks before they show you the door.... a few mismatched matches etc. :D

Nightmare scenario (for me)......
My good thing Nelson has the round from hell and Hatalsky who I didn't back has a stormer.

Think you're on a good thing now Clive as if you look at his round scores he never gets worse... always improving by 3 every 3rd round.

10 72 72 69
7 70 69 66
13 71 70

a 63 today should do nicely! Perhaps the only way he could lose is if I back him.... but surely I can't take 8/1 when 125/1 was available (from the right telephonist!).... can I?

Everybody else I've backed this week has been crap!

In the past few weeks I've backed Davis, Leonard, Tway, Cink, Cook and Hansen so I was expecting to be doing homework for next week tonight! Hope Morris is better at controlling his nerves than I am!

Fingers crossed..

Clive,
Just tell him I've left him alone.... would calm him down no end!
(Rosie Jones must also be relieved)

I don't think I have backed a winner at the start of an event since Ernie won Dubai. I have had some in-running winners Tewell, Leonard, Cabrera, etc. Think early retirement from these pre-event outrights beckons (but not early enough!) .... I need to devote more time to being a bookie... each week I am more than covering my golf losses laying at betfair (golf/horses). Monty at 2.00 and 2.50 saved the week again (and it's locked in)

Final update: 1-2; -2.50 units

Nelson 19th
Thorpe 4th
Rachels 7th

Thorpe never got any momentum during the final round and had to settle for a share of 4th place with 2 others. Nelson was never in the tournament and nor was Rachels until a closing 64 which left him one shot out of the place money.

Senior Tour ytd:
Matchups: 7-5; +2.47 units
Outrights: 10-22; +51.38 units

Clive,
Unlucky with Hatalsky hopefully it will not decimate his future prices too much. What's the story with qualifying for future events? Do the Seniors have a top 10 this week OK to play next week? Is he stuck with pre-qualifying all season unless he wins?
Any sponsor's exemptions in Seniors?
