This is for all the fans across the world that happened to catch the not so subtle attempt at humor by announcer Joe Buck as he cut short the lathering of compliments that he and Troy Aikman were in the midst of coating on No. 4.
When Buck asked whether Aikman agreed that ?some? announcers perhaps get a little mushy in their adoration for the future Hall of Famer, only to follow up his question with another quick series of compliments on how the lights gleamed off Favre?s helmet, sounding more like a school girl than a professional broadcaster, it practically made up for all the years of battling through Madden?s crush on Favre in the blink of an eye.
If nothing more, Buck?s dry sense of sarcasm really helped set the tone for a great long weekend of football that once again reinforced the adage of how ?On any given Sunday? can provide bettors with just as many chances to profit as it does gray hairs.
Take for example the San Francisco 49ers, scoring more points in their Sunday afternoon fireworks display at Arizona than they had in their previous four games combined. The Monday Night snooze-fest that closed off the week set a record for going the furthest into a game without either side scoring (it had been 65 years since the Detroit Lions and New York Giants completed the NFL?s last scoreless tie).
The only real suspense in this Mud Bowl, though, other than wondering if one of the teams could eventually score and put an end to the misery of all the fans watching in TV land, was the possibility that Miami might actually record its first win of the season. Alas, a Dolphin team featuring a rookie QB handing off a ball to a fourth-string RB with even less experience could not get it done in the clutch and Miami has tread one step closer to immortality, falling to 0-11.
Looking at the remaining schedule, it is just as possible that Miami could go winless on the year as it is that they could win four out of their next five games. The Dolphins have lost six of their games by three points, making them prime candidates to pull out a win this week over the New York Jets or the following week in Buffalo. But on the other hand, three of Miami?s next five games are divisional and they finish the season against a Bengals team that has suddenly come back to life and could be fighting for a Wild Card spot by Week 17.
You have to stay alert this week, as the NFL kicks off its late season Thursday night schedule. Opening the weekday feature game is a much anticipated collision between the NFC?s two best teams, as Dallas hosts Green Bay as a 6.5 point favorite. The total has been set at 51.5. It should be a great matchup to set the table for another exciting week of NFL action.
