Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)

Trevor Immelman to win 20/1 e.w. @ Ladbrokes
I'm expecting big things of Immelman this year. He certainly showed that he had moved up a level from May onwards with nine top-10 finishes in his last 16 events of 2006 and he opened this year in similar vein with 3rd in the Mercedes-Benz Championship and threatening another top-10 finish in the Sony Open until a poor final round. He has the ability to move up and join Els and Goosen as multiple winners on this Tour and he already has one win under his belt, the 2006 Western Open. So, having made his debut on this course last year and shot every round under 70, he really should be contending for Tour title #2 this week.

K.J. Choi to win 50/1 e.w. @ BetFred
Choi last played in this event two years ago having missed the cut in each of the previous three years, but on this occasion he had a good chance to win severely dented by being paired with home favourite Phil Mickelson in the final pairing in the last round. With such a famously loud crowd in support of Lefty, it was no surprise that Choi fell back to finish 11th. But in his current form, he could certainly present himself with another chance for victory. He won the Chrysler Championship in October to enable him, like Immelman, to play the two events in Hawaii and rest until this event and he has shown even better form than the South African. Despite a 2nd round 77 after holding the overnight lead, Choi bounced back to finish 8th in the Mercedes-Benz Championship and then finished 4th in the Sony Open. With that form and his impressive last outing at Scottsdale, he should warrants shorter odds than this.

Nick Watney to win 80/1 available generally
Watney is another player in excellent form, finishing 13th and 9th in the last two weeks. In fact, in his last ten PGA Tour starts, dating back to the Reno-Tahoe Open in the last week of August, he has finished in the top-ten five times. With such a promising progression in his career, his two previous performances on this course can be overlooked and while these results may suggest that a place-only bet may be more appropriate, this is similar to his maiden win on the Nationwide Tour - the 2004 Tour Championship. On that occasion, he had become steadily more competitive in his rookie season until finishing 4th and 2nd in two of three events before that win and this may be a repetition for Watney in 2007. As the number one-ranked collegiate player in 2002, this is certainly more than purple patch of form.

Outrights:

Charles Howell III(+3050) e.w. @ thegreek
- - I love themes. I was with CHIII in Hawaii, and it stung. I then thought it obvious that that disappointment would take its toll and didn't just swerve, but faded Howell in Palm Springs. I then thought it likely (not obvious) that San Diego was a beautiful "double dip opportunity" for putting things right (i.e., from Hawaii this year, and from the "fly it in cup" moment on the 72nd hole in San Diego in 2005 from which CHIII never recovered), and Charlie was outstanding in the effort. (Friday's wisdom: "Someone told me once a long time ago that golf owes you nothing," Howell said. "And I think that statement holds true." . . . Sunday's professionalism: "I have to add up in my head how long ago it's been since I won," Howell said. "That win at Kingsmill was truly great, but it feels like another career." . . . "I gave him a run," Howell said. "Anytime you try to win a tournament against that guy, it's tough. I played well down the stretch. He just never flinched." . . . "To win seven in a row, I'd cut my arm off to win another one," said Howell, who has nine second-place finishes since his lone PGA Tour victory in 2002. "I'm a huge Tiger Woods fan. But damn, I'd love to have beaten him.") Bottom line, IMO, is that CHIII is in an overdue purple patch with a sturdy foundation, and he comes out of San Diego with high mental and emotional fibre to continue (in the vein of Sabbatini in 2006) as the budding story of the 2007 West Coast swing.

Mark Calcavecchia(66/1 and +825 for Top 5) @ SIA and thegreek
- - At the midpoint last week, I know someone that was looking to find someone off the radar and went with a play on Nick Watney @ 80/1. At the time I liked my position with Howell, Buckle and Quigley vs. The Striped One, so I was in no way looking to add on through my very limited (SIA or win only) in-running markets, but my immediate thought on reading the post (without even reviewing the leaderboard or available odds) was "I've already circled Calcavecchia for next week, so I'd try there." No regrets that I didn't take on another body in San Diego, and now I will avoid any regrets that would come from swerving from my plotted plans for this week for considerations of price (the best I could cobble together) or chicness. ("In his 27th year -- yes, his 27th -- as a professional golfer, Calcavecchia knows a lot more about golf than the young guns bombing and gouging it today without much forethought. More importantly, he knows a lot more about his own game. He has made no changes to either equipment or approach, yet he is achieving better results than in '06 largely through patience, some key putting and a back that isn't in constant upheaval . . .Of the three, putting is the one area over which he frets a bit. At the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, he put up a third-round 75 at LaQuinta Country Club after he missed six putts inside five feet. Three were two feet or less. Friday's 74 on the South offered more of the same, including an 18-inch putt that barely hit the cup at the first hole . . . "The putting gets iffy, but, overall, I'm still pretty good around the greens," he said. "I don't get discouraged." . . . In fact, the more he plays, the easier it is for him to find his ball. This has led to a cycle of preparation that he wouldn't recommend to anyone else . . . "I like playing three or four weeks in a row," said Calcavecchia, who next week returns home to Scottsdale for the FBR Open, his fourth straight start. "As I get older, I realize that when I take two weeks off, I can't help but really take two weeks off where I don't do a thing. Then Monday comes around and I haven't touched a club for 13 days, and I'm like, "Holy ... I better get back to work.' It works for me, and I gradually play my way into some pretty good form."") (And one of his television announcing buddies - which one escapes me - also stated at the start of the season that Calcavecchia was terrorizing the courses back home in Phoenix when he had played with him just before the season started).

Chris DiMarco(+3250 and +565) @ thegreek
- - Travelling from the Middle East, where I expected noteworthy things from featured pairings with Montgomerie, Els, etc. it's fair to say DiMarco was on task. I think the mission continues on pace with an excellent spot this week, and is not an exhausting futility from the grind of another Tour on another continent (FWIW, a check of his website shows his plans out of the box also include the next three events straight through the match play).

Camilo Villegas(+8050 and +2050) @ the greek
- - After the first round in San Diego, it's a fact that I was kicking myself the most over Camilo among the two dozen or so suspects for the event that my scissors had left lying on the cutting room floor, and then Senor Villegas went out on Friday and folded like a cheap suit. I think the hot times of Super Bowl week in Phoenix fit him like one of his shirts and provide an excellent spot for making some amends if his game is at all in shape.

Lee Janzen(150/1 and 25/1) e.w. @ 5dimes
- - Amid all the surging youth, this turns up as the name I can't shake, with a sponsor's invite to his 17th straight appearance . . . Not even on the "list" of place options at the greek, so lurching forward with Win Only. Expecting a decent ride, but Dumb and Dumber status with my bottom line come Sunday night. (Edit: Top 5 added at 5dimes, and initial Win Only status amended accordinigly. :SIB)

In case you missed it, I liked the impression left with me from last week by this simple self-assessment: "Buckle's feet slipped in the sand as he struck the balln (on #12), which sailed well to the right and left him little green between a bunker and the flag. Attempting a flop shot to give himself a short putt at par, it came out too strong and tumbled over the green on the other side. He pitched to 4 feet and missed the putt, taking double bogey . . ."I lost a bit of rhythm and was all over the place at the end," Buckle said."

may as well not have bothered
Can't agree at all.

Just one for instance, Lee Janzen(25/1 for Top 5) without having to bite on a Win wager - not many books anywhere would blow away that "opportunity". :mj07:

And if you are here in the States - as over 300 million are - it's a righteously Sweet piece of news for as long as it lasts.:mj09:

OK - I see it from your perspective but to be honest you are being ripped off in the US

Janzen top 5 prices available as I speak:

40-1 Totesport
35-1 Betfair
30-1 Centrebet
33-1 Betfred

In a global marketplace what else would you expect to pay a minimum of 30% more for?.

I think you guys are being slaughtered through no fault of your own and don't think 5 dimes should be at all congratulated for their appalling offering.

Hey 5Dimes has the top five back. Even if the odds are a bit off, like DTB says we have a chance to hit them for a mistake here and there. Better than nothing.

Golf - FBR Open February 1 - 4, 2007
Top 10 Finishers
Odds to finish in the Top 10 position
Troy Matteson (+545) [pending]

Quite an interesting chap--goes from rarily making cut to making 8 in row with 5 top 10's

72 hole match Match Van Pelt over Purdy @ 5D
Other Sports - 356 Bo Van Pelt (Tourn) -106 for Game

Was interesting to see V-P as dog here--Purdy course and current form not that great and getting guy who made 85% of cuts against guy who barily busted 50% in 06--these don't always win but I'll take a shot especially in light of odds.

will skip scoring props this week as there is no history on this course since it was revamped where it has had wet--

Any thoughts on Verplank v. DL3?

Any thoughts on Verplank v. DL3?

He's -125 at cris. Seems like vershank has done well at FBR while Love has been mediocre. Vershank looked pretty good early at Bob Hope.
