I have a big basketball game that night . I'm tied with 12-2 conference records and its an away game playing the other 1st place team. But that morning in bed before school starts my wife tells me she is having contractions and the baby is already 2 weeks overdue.. We time the contractions and they are far apart. We call the doctor and he instructs us when the contractions get to a certain time then call me and we will order a C-section. Now wait a minute. I went to 30 Lemaze classes and bought the pillow to practice the breathing rhythms. "Breathe honey let it out slowly " They didn't prepare you for this. C-section . Then I tell my wife I have a game tonight. I have never ever missed a basketball game in my life. I didn't want to tell her 1st place is on the line. anyway we stayed at home and finally later in the afternoon the contractions were getting faster. The doctor told us to meet him at the hospital . The doctor met us and they scheduled a C-section. I called my asst coach and told him I cannot coach the team tonight. Sarah was born around 7.30 pm that night. I wasn't allowed in the room because when they took blood from my wife I almost passed out. Doctor looked at me and " we have no one to pick you up during the procedure. " So you can wait in the waiting room"
Sarah turned 44 today and has taught in Austin since she graduated from the Unv. of Texas. She is 6'2 and was a good basketball player in HS recruited by St Bonny,Army. Siena, Rice and a few others But she wanted to go to Texas Judy Conradt was the coach and watched her tape and told her she had gds that were 6'2 and sarah was a post player ..Judy knew the coach at Rice but Sarah wanted to go to Texas and did and not play basketball anymore.
I missed that game in '79 and had my 1st baby . After Sarah had 2 more girls and a boy We lost that game that night but a few weeks later in the sectionals we got our revenge and won by 15.
So Happy Valentines Day out there to everyone. Valentine day is always special day in my life. Back later with a few games
