Federer is the small +200 favorite as he looks for his sixth US Open title. Rafael Nadal is just behind at +225 odds. Andy Murray (+350) is the only other men?s player with less than +1000 odds.
Federer won this tournament five years in a row from 2004-2008. He got shocked last year in the finals by Juan Martin del Potro.
The Swiss legend is telling friends he feels better than ever. That?s rare for a tennis player who is 29 with a ton of miles. He?s going for his record 17th major title. These odds seem optimistic for someone who lost in the Wimbledon quarterfinals and has won just two tournaments this year.
Nadal is the No. 1 player in the world and the top seed for this tourney. The 24-year-old owns eight major titles, but he?s never won the US Open or even made the finals. He?s won both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.
Scotland?s Andy Murray hasn?t been able to bring Wimbledon glory to Great Britain, but he?s still a solid candidate here. He recently split with coach Miles Maclagan, but that shouldn?t hurt him for this tourney. Murray lost in the US Open final in 2008 to Federer. Could this be his first major win at 23 years old?
Argentine David Nalbandian is next on the odds list at +1000. American Andy Roddick (the 2003 champion) is at +1500 odds along with Novak Djokovic.
The women?s side took a hit when Serena Williams was ruled out with a foot injury. Her sister Venus is battling rust from a layoff with her knee injury.
However, the Williams sisters haven?t dominated the US Open like Wimbledon. They?ve won just a combined once in the last seven years. Venus hasn?t won here since 2001.
Clijsters is the +300 favorite after winning last year and in 2005. Maria Sharapova (+350) is the 2006 winner, but she?s still trying to regain her form from before shoulder surgery.
Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka are both +650. Note that Justine Henin (2003 +2007 winner) is out with an elbow injury.
