forgive my ignorance but can someone please explain to me how this works. is the first round double elimination? and if so how do they already know the matches for those matches beyond the first 16? thanks.
Each play 1 round robin game within group. 3 points for win...1 for draw. Top 2 in each group standings go to round of 16. Obviously many will have same amount of points so tie-breakers are used.
The first decider is goal difference, then total goals scored, followed by head-to-head results, and then I believe a stupid lottery/flip of the coin will be used if all else fails.

thanks alb. i would have thought a more equitable solution to the first round would have been in place. a lottery, if necessary, seems to lack consideration for talent. but at least i now know why that first round seemed so scrambled to me. i can now at least follow the leader board.
