Toney TKOs Holyfield!
IBF cruiserweight champion James Toney was brilliant in dismantling former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield Saturday night at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Toney broke down and stopped Holyfield in round nine. After a good first round by the noticably bigger Holyfield, Toney counter-punched effectively in round two. Holyfield crunched Toney with a hard shot to the head early in round three, but the quicker Toney fought back gamely. Toney hurt Holyfield with bombs in round four but Holyfield battled back in familiar Holyfield fashion. It was Holyfield's last hurrah. From that point, Toney clocked Holyfield almost at will, while using his trademark nifty defensive moves to avoid Holyfield's punches for the duration of the fight. After round eight, trainer Don Turner told Holyfield he would stop the fight if the beating continues. In round nine, Toney dropped Holyfield with a body shot and the fight was stopped at 1:42. With the win, Toney becomes a viable contender in the heavyweight division. Meanwhile, with a record of 2-4-2 in his last six and a loss to the current cruiserweight champ, the 40-year-old Holyfield's future prospects look dim.
