I haven't read any ones posts because I haven't come up with my lines yet. I don't want to see or hear them until I make up my lines . But this morning the headlines in the Sports section of the Dallas Morning News was " US qualified for World Cup. " And that reminds me of one of my most famous stories told here before many years ago. It was I think by Steve Serby of the NY Post.
Its the NY Post sports writer interviewing an Italian named Paulo. It was the year the World Cup was hosted by the US. And it was about " has the US improved in soccer to compete vs the worlds best. Because the US was host they get an automatic bid in the tournament even though they didn't qualify .
As the interview is going on Paulo has a soccer ball and is keeping it in the air not letting the ball touch the ground. I remember Paulo saying the US has only one world class player in Rudy Meoli and he is a goalie. Paulo also's says that although soccer has improved in America they are still far behind Central South America and the Europeans . And remember Paulo is still kicking the ball in the air during this interview. At no point is the ball touching the ground and then Paulo flips the ball to the other foot. There are some other questions that the writer asks Paulo and gives the US team very little hope. But at the end of the interview the Post writer says " I forgot to mention. Paulo is 12 years old and just moved to New Jersey from Naples, Italy.
I read that and thought Are we behind in soccer in the world when a 12 year old can do an entire interview flipping the ball from one foot to another Made many of us think although we have improved in the US we are light years behind in Men soccer in the world So we made the World Cup and that's great but this article was written many years ago so lets not get our hopes to high just because we qualified. But lets cheer for our team and watch the English, Germany's and Italys
