Going for 3 longshots, the 1st two Tom Wargo (100/1 Centrebet) and Leonard Thompson (150/1 Hills and Stan James) play well round here and quite often pop up in the top 10, the 3rd play is on John Harris - mentioned a few weeks ago this prolific winning amateur is gradually finding his feet and finished with 2 good rounds at the weekend 125/1 at William Hill could be generous.

Ignoring my recent regulars Davis & Hatalsky as they are too young and lack experience (of the course).

From the school of the bleeding obvious but have to try Larry Nelson again at 12/1 with bet365. Won here the last 2 years and recent top 10's in the Players & Open.

Last time I did him to secure a hat-trick in an event... Clive put the mockers on by saying he had a broken neck or back or something... so Clive... even if he is seen being pushed to the first tee in a wheelchair with a zimmer frame waiting... you don't need to tell me... it's too late anyway.... the cash is down!

Outright plays (2 units):

Allen Doyle to win 16/1 e.w. @ Five Dimes (1 unit to win & 1 unit to finish in top-5)
Has yet to repeat his ultra-consistent play of the past few years, but at least with two 7th place finishes and a 12th place in the last three weeks, he is improving. This is the scene of some impressive displays in the past - three top-5 finishes in four years - so hopefully he will find another gear this week.

Larry Nelson to win 20/1 e.w. @ Stan James [5 places option]
Very strange price. Surrey go 10/1 and 12/1 is commonly available, so looks good from a value standpoint at least. When the player in mind has won this event for the last two years, he is most definitely good value at 20/1.

Jim Thorpe to win 33/1 e.w. @ Bet365 or Five Dimes
Last week's letdown after his runners-up spot in the Ford Seniors was to be expected and can be ignored, though he has shown a tendency since winning the Tradition to give up on events if he has a poor first round. Top-20 on all three previous starts here and runner-up two years ago, he should be a factor if in contention after round one.

Stan,
Bit surprised by your 20/1 Nelson at Stan James... but now realise how I missed it. I do a cut and paste of prices into a spreadsheet and forgot to clear the James column from last week - then didn't notice Nelson was missing from it..... 2 shocking errors

I hate taking a wrong price.... bugger!! But anyway I hope he wins for you.

Final update: 2-1; +6.75 units

Doyle 12th
Nelson 5th
Thorpe 3rd

Have had players in contention in every event today, but this looked the best opportunity to finally secure an outright win. That is, until Thorpe bogeyed the par-5 last to finish one shot out of the playoff. Profitable place finish though and a small profit on the defending champion who shot the low round of the day to gain a share of 5th place. Doyle had been in contention until an indifferent last round.

Senior PGA Tour ytd
Matchups: 7-5; +2.47 units
Outrights: 14-27; +79.13 units

Have just read the report on this event ...

Thorpe had just a 5-foot putt for a birdie and the victory.

?I thought Jimmy was going to win it,? said Gilder, who beat Hale Irwin a week earlier on the first playoff hole of the SBC Open in Chicago. ?I really didn?t expect him to miss that putt.?

But Thorpe went past the hole by 6 feet then just missed coming back.

?The putter just exploded,? Thorpe said. ?I guess that?s what you call choking.?

Sure glad it wasn't on live TV over here
