I will not call it "Lowes Motor Speedway." Nope. Never. Heh eh.
It was, is and always will be Charlotte, to me anyway. Proof that is should remain Charlotte is the fact that "Lowes" was not in my spell checker!
Anyway, this week, as the boys are still in Concord, NC., for the Coca-Cola 600, we'll preview the upcoming Marathon race, as well as look back at how I did with my picks last week.
Charlotte is a mile and a half long quad-oval. Pretty much the first of it's kind before Atlanta took on its current configuration. It's a really neat track, in my opinion, and there is always something going on somewhere. This is the longest race the Winston Cup stars will do this year, and 400 laps to make 600 miles can be quite taxing for some of them.
Okay, let's take a look at how I did with my Winston Picks.
My Picks To Win The Winston:
88-Dale Jarrett -Finished a disappointing second, but was a good sport about it at the end.
24-Jeff Gordon- Oh man! This is five weeks in a row I have picked the winner! Maybe I should go to Vegas?nah. Jeff took the win in a back up car. Simply incredible.
28-Ricky Rudd-Shafted by the inconsistent rules of this all-star race, Rudd did not make it into the Winston.
2-Rusty Wallace- Caught for speeding on Pit road on the final stop and finished 15th.
8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. -After lagging back most of the night, Jr. finished 7th.
15-Michael Waltrip-His back up car must not have been as good as Gordon's, as Michael finished 20th.
Shot In the Dark Pick:
1-Steve Park-Yuck. 19th.
Others to watch:
40-Sterling Marlin-Sterling did not make it into the Winston.
25-Jerry Nadeau-Finished fifth in a decent run.
17-Matt Kenseth-Finished 14th.
10-Johnny Benson-Finished 9th.
Now, with all that non-sensicalism behind us, let's look ahead to the Coca-Cola 600!
My Picks to win the Coca-Cola 600:
18-Bobby Labonte -I have a feeling it's time for the horse to once again get the feeling of someone in the saddle.
88-Dale Jarrett -Had the best car to close the Winston, but ran out of laps. This week, he'll have an extra 100 miles to get it all sorted out.
24-Jeff Gordon -Becoming a weekly pick again, and after the performance in the Winston, do you think he'll use the back up car this week?
29-Kevin Harvick -All mechanical problems aside, I think Harvick might be able to pull out another one before the end of the season. Why not at Charlotte?
17-Matt Kenseth -The defending champion always has to be a favorite, but can he repeat after a dismal run in the Winston?
2-Rusty Wallace -I'm not saying Rusty is going to win, or anything, but if he finishes second, it will be because Gordon is first.
Shot In The Dark Pick:
31-Mike Skinner -Don't even ask me why, just because.
Others to watch:
25-Jerry Nadeau -Runs these tracks well. This is confirmed by a fifth place finish in the Winston and a win last fall in Atlanta.
8-Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -Hoping?.hoping?
99-Jeff Burton- If those Roush engines can hold up, Burton could be a factor.
28-Ricky Rudd -Yates cars win at Charlotte. That could be the 11th Commandment.
Well, gang, there you have it. This weeks hits and misses.
As for an Official top 5, I'll go with these:
1. 2 Rusty Wallace
2. 24 Jeff Gordon
3. 88 Dale Jarrett
4. 28 Ricky Rudd
5. 17 Matt Kenseth
That's it for now. Take care of yourselves, Good Luck, and have a safe and happy Memorial Day. Think about your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents and thank them for all that we have to call our own today.
Until next time, my friends.
