It was Harris who was at the helm last year when Florida ran over Georgia, literally and figuratively, in a 38-20 rout that wasn?t as close as the score indicates. Harris himself wasn?t the reason it was a rout: He only completed three passes and accounted for just 31 of his team?s 445 rushing yards.

But Harris guided the offense that day. Throw in the fact that he?s a running quarterback, which Georgia struggled with two games ago, and it?s fair for the Bulldogs to be leery.

?Just a great athletic quarterback who?s an outstanding passer,? Georgia coach Mark Richt said. ?And he?s 1-0 against the Dawgs as well.?

It was the first start of the season for Harris, who lost the job in the preseason to Grier, who was then suspended for a year for taking a banned substance. Last year he started the final six games of the season, winning four games, throwing for 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 338 yards and three touchdowns.

?I think people don?t take his arm (seriously enough),? Georgia outside linebacker Davin Bellamy said. ?He has a pretty good arm, he can make the throws out there. He?s a great athlete. He?s a dual-threat athlete that we?ve gotta make sure we have eyelids on at all times.?

The upshot for the Bulldogs is they have some experienced against a dual-threat quarterback. The downside is it didn?t go well.

Florida scored 28 points on Les Miles at Death Valley at night should be known. The talent at QB is there for Florida.

Florida still has a 1 game lead in the East. Now Georgia comes sneaky into Florida trying to tie things up. Will this work out for Georgia.

Georgia has lost Nick Chubb which was a huge blow. They have capable replacements but it just aint the same.

Lambert has totally lost his confidence. Will he regain it with a Florida defense as good if not better than Alabama's ? Ouch

The Georgia defense needs to step up and make some plays. Georgia defense is getting back some players this week but I do not think this will affect the outcome.

Georgia struggled against Mizzou, and Florida handled them 21-3

Georgia beats the tigers 9-6 with field goals.:scared

Field Goals aint going to beat Florida.

There are storm clouds hanging over Georgia today from that hurricane drifting from Mexico.

Trouble is the clouds are going to follow the Bulldogs this Saturday.

BOOM !

Tennessee?s Joshua Dobbs racked up 118 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns, leading his team to a 38-31 over Georgia on Oct. 10.

There are ?some similarities? between Dobbs and Harris, according to Bellamy, who summed up the mantra about defending those kind of guys.

?Those dual-threat quarterbacks, we?ve gotta keep them in the pocket,? Bellamy said.

The more Georgia can keep Harris in the pocket, the better chance it would seem to have to win the game. He does have a good arm, but he?s also just 5-foot-11, so he?d be better off throwing on the run. As Florida receiver Brandon Powell said this week, when asked what he most likes about Harris: ?I just like that he can extend plays with his feet. Some people have to change their defenses, and that opens things up for other players.?

Not keeping Harris in the pocket creates headaches for everyone else. The secondary has to stay on their man in case Harris throws it at the last second. The cornerbacks and outside linebackers have to contain the edge ? a huge problem last year for Georgia against Florida?s running backs. The defensive line and inside linebackers have to be ready for the scramble up the gut, or the designed keeper.

?When you?re playing a running quarterback it?s important always to have someone?s eyes on him,? Georgia inside linebacker Jake Ganus said. ?And just know your responsibilities. If you?re not responsible for the quarterback then do your responsibility.

The Dogs have been underwhelming this season on defense and special teams. The loss of running back Nick Chubb meant the loss of a great player who could make up for the team?s other significant flaws. But Georgia?s biggest issue going back to last spring has been the absence of a competent starting quarterback, a passer who could make plays to win games in big games.

For that, there is no excuse ? not at a major college program with the resources Georgia has, not with a coach like Mark Richt whose career specialty has been offense and quarterback development.

There have been recruiting mistakes. There have been coaching mistakes. There have been mistakes in terms of how Richt and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer approached this whole quarterback competition after realizing they might have an issue with an unimpressive depth chart of Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey and Faton Bauta.

Richt isn?t going to make such declarations now, if ever. But for a coach who has largely enjoyed starting quarterback stability and success at Georgia ? Matthew Stafford, David Greene, D.J. Shockley and Aaron Murray among those coming off the assembly line ? this must be a bit of a shock.

I asked Richt on Tuesday if he second-guesses himself on anything that led to this year?s situation. But it was the second question he had taken on the quarterback topic, and apparently that was one too many. (Maybe two.)

?I?ll just say this: We are this deep into the season, and we?re playing Florida, and we?re in a very meaningful game,? he said. ?To me, there?s still a lot to be written this season. So I?m not ready to say what kind of year it was for quarterbacks yet or not.?

Maybe. But it?s no coincidence that Georgia?s offense has struggled against the only three good defenses it has faced this season: Alabama, Vanderbilt and Missouri.

It?s easy to dump on Lambert. But he can?t change who he is. It?s not like he?s a problem player who isn?t open to coaching. He transferred from Virginia because he wasn?t good enough. The problems go much deeper than him.

Richt (recruiting): With Georgia?s resources, it should always have quarterback depth. The program shouldn?t have to rely on ?bridge? quarterbacks, and that has been the case for two years. The Dogs needed starters to get them from Murray to Eason. They managed to get by with Hutson Mason last season but were limited with what they could do offensively. There have been recruiting mistakes with Christian LeMay, Jacob Park and, presumably, Ramsey. Georgia waited too long and whiffed on Deshaun Watson, who?s now leading Clemson. One has to wonder why Richt even recruited Bauta, knowing he wasn?t a golden-arm, pro-style offense quarterback, or maybe a major college quarterback at all. So this situation falls solely at the head coach?s feet.

His replacement, Schottenheimer, has failed to this point. Richt called Schottenheimer ?a great coach.? I never heard that adjective when he was in the NFL. The scouting report was closer to: good guy, works well with players, unimaginative and predictable. Fact: None of Georgia?s quarterbacks have gotten better and play calling has been predictable.

Richt reiterated Tuesday that the decision to go with Lambert as the starter wasn?t finalized until just before the season and that the decision was close. ?It wasn?t like one guy just stole the show and that?s it. They all had some really bright moments and they all had some moments that weren?t that bright,? he said. ?It was a fairly inconsistent camp. Was there ever a guy who was on top and stayed on top the whole way through? There really was not.? So how is it that in the first three games against Louisiana-Monroe, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Southern, Ramsey didn?t get more snaps and Bauta didn?t get any? Sharing plays in the first four weeks, before the Alabama game, might have been a truer test for the three.

Then again, it might not have made a difference. It has been a bad a situation from the outset, and that?s the problem.

ouch

that Florida defense has Grayson rolling around trouble sleep

He is a drop back passer who is going to get drilled.

I wonder what he has to say about his predicament.....hmmmm

when coach Mark Richt was asked directly about it after Wednesday?s practice, he did very little to quell the speculation. All he would allow is they?ve been ?repping more than one guy with the ones.?

A lot of people are translating that to mean that they are going to make a change at the starting position and that it?s going to be Faton Bauta rather than Greyson Lambert when the Bulldogs line up Saturday against No. 11 Florida in Jacksonville. Others ? such as me ? believe there has been a change in the hierarchy behind Lambert and that Georgia is simply getting Bauta ready to be the No. 2 guy.

The only ones who know for sure ? Richt and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer ? aren?t saying. And why would they? Why not let the Gators stew over the possibilities for a few days before they kick off at EverBank Field? Anything to muddy the water is good at this point in their minds.

So why is he not starting or even receiving serious consideration? There are three reasons. Georgia QBs are 6?3? or above in height and have big strong arms. Bauta has neither. He is 6?2? and has the weakest arm of the three. 2nd, because of his weaker arm, Bauta probably throws the worst deep ball of the three as well. 3rd, and this is purely speculation, but for some reason I think that Richt has something against dual-threat quarterbacks. It sounds ridiculous I know, but think about it. Georgia has only ever had one "dual-threat" QB in the 15 seasons Richt has been head coach, and that was D.J. Shockley, who was a 5th year senior and was fully encouraged to stay in the pocket as much as possible. Every other dual-threat guy that UGA has ever recruited has never really received consideration and as a result transferred (Logan Gray, Christian Lemay, and most recently Jacob Park to name a few). Heck, Richt hates dual-threat QB?s so much that he offered Cam Newton a scholarship as a Tight End. In the words of Chris Carter, "Comon Man!"

At the very least Georgia should give Bauta a similar role as Florida gave Tim Tebow his freshman year, when they won the national championship. In any 3rd and short situation Florida would bring in Tebow, and plow him ahead for a couple yards and the first down. They called it "Third and Tebow." I don?t know about you, but "Third and Bauta" sounds pretty good to me!

oh shit for Bauta

start him vs Florida defense now

at this point in the season when it means the SEC championship could be on the line

good idea.

Saturday?s game is an elimination game for the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-2 SEC), who will be out of the SEC East race with a loss. A win puts them in a first-place tie with Florida (6-1, 4-1) and holding the tiebreaker advantage with games remaining against Kentucky and Auburn.

If Georgia?s going to make something happen, might as well be now.

?It?s time,? senior wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell said. ?We?re in the last half of the season. If we?re going to try to make a push for anything, now?s the time to do so.?

Enter Bauta.

Several media outlets citing anonymous sources are reporting that the redshirt junior from West Palm Beach, Fla., is going to get his first career start on Saturday. DawgNation.com has confirmed only that Bauta has gotten extensive work with the No. 1 offense the last two weeks and that there is an offensive plan for him against the Gators.:scared

It couldn?t hurt as Georgia?s offense has evaporated to next to nothing of late. In the last three outings against Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri, the Bulldogs? offense has averaged just 12 points a game while scoring only three touchdowns. Last time out, Georgia defeated Missouri 9-6 while failing to score a touchdown for the first time since 2010, a span of 48 games.

Junior Greyson Lambert was the starter then, as he has been throughout the season. And as pedestrian as he has been during this recent stretch ? 48-of-88 (.545) for 543 yards with two TDs and two interceptions in the last three games ? backup Brice Ramsey has been even worse (1-of-6 for 20 yards and 2 INTs).

So with a bye week before the Florida game, Georgia?s coaches decided to open up the quarterback competition again. That went from all three quarterbacks getting repetitions with the No. 1 offense to only Lambert and Bauta getting them.

By the end of this past week, the coaches apparently decided to go with Bauta. That remains unconfirmed, however, as head coach Mark Richt?s last comments on the subject came Wednesday and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has not been available for interviews since Oct. 14.

?All I can tell you is we?ve been repping more than one guy with the 1s, and we?re going to continue to do that,? Richt said after Wednesday?s practice. ?I think we evaluate that every week at every position. That?s just how football is. That?s the type of environment that we?re in. Everybody?s job is up for grabs.?

So might be the jobs of Georgia?s coaches, given this latest move. It?s a high-risk situation, no matter how it turns out.

If Bauta, who has never started a game ? nor even had a meaningful snap in a meaningful game ? fails miserably against the Gators? stout defense, the coaching staff will be criticized for throwing an inexperienced quarterback into a situation for which he was not prepared. If Bauta comes through and plays well, the coaches could be questioned for not evaluating the competition better earlier in the season.

?So much is at risk here, mostly the rest of the season,? Georgia noseguard Chris Mayes said prophetically this past Tuesday.

The logic, if there is any to going with Bauta, is that the 6-foot-3, 215-pound athlete will bring a threat-to-run element to the quarterback position that the Bulldogs haven?t had this season. At Dwyer High School, Bauta earned the nickname ?Tim Tebow Jr.? for his ability to run the football off the zone-read option.

?I think they?ll run the offense that they run,? said Jack Daniels, Bauta?s coach at Dwyer High. ?I don?t think they?re going to do anything different. I think he can make throws just as well as Lambert and Ramsey. He?ll be fine running what they have.?

Interestingly, this game had very little to do with Georgia?s offense last year. It was the Bulldogs? defense that let them down as Florida ran over them to the tune of 418 yards rushing while calling runs on 60 of 66 offensive plays.

?There?s some lessons to be learned for the coaching staff, for sure,? Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt said. ?But for the players, they lost a lot of guys, we lost a lot of guys. So I don?t think last year?s game will have any bearing for what happened in the 60 minutes down there this Saturday.?

Meanwhile, though the Gators throw the ball more under first-year head coach Jim McElwain, they?re doing so with a mobile quarterback of their own. Treon Harris took over as the starter after Will Grier was suspended for a year by the for taking performance-enhancing supplements. Harris, who started for Florida in their 38-20 win over last year, is reminiscent of Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who accounted for 430 total yards and five touchdowns in beating Georgia earlier this season.

Such has been the unpredictable nature of this crazy series, which almost always is played with some level of league-championship ramifications. In seven seasons from 2006 through 2012, the Georgia-Florida winner reached the SEC Championship game five times (Florida 3, UGA 2). That?s the case again this season.

?We?re definitely ready for this game,? said junior wideout Reggie Davis, one of 16 Florida residents on Georgia?s roster. ?Games like this, crazy things happen. It?s just like Michigan-Michigan State, for example, and Florida State and Georgia Tech this past weekend. Games like this, you?ve just got to be on your P?s and Q?s because anything can happen.?

All of which makes Bauta?s prominent presence in the middle of it all so intriguing.

?If there?s anybody who can handle that moment ? I think it?s Faton,? Daniels said of his former player. There?s really something special about him that I hope everybody finds out about tomorrow. ? He carried our football team on his back. I think he?s got some good players around him there at Georgia and he just needs to do what he can to help them win.?
.......................................................................

oh shit Fontoon . Fontoon has the weakest arm of the 3 QB's. Lambert has not been able to rifle the ball into completions.

This should work good. :scared

maybe he can scramble and run around Florida's defense.:mj07:

one thing is certain. If Lambert comes in to relieve Fautoon at any time, the Bulldogs
are dog meat.
