I'll be flying to Canada, specifically Edmonton via a layover in Toronto, in the near future. I have found the exchange rate from US dollars to Canadian dollars is 100/157, but now I'm looking for a place around here (I guess a bigger bank??) where I can exchange the money before I get there. I hear it's much more convenient to have your Canadian money in tow rather than to try to exchange it after I get there.

How much does stuff cost? I hear that milk and eggs and other like groceries are sky high comparatively. Is there anything I can bring that won't be hard to transport that I could get a lot cheaper here?

If any of you are hunters, how much does a box of 12 gauge shotgun shells cost (steel shot, 3.5/3 inch BB or T) in Canadian currency? We can only carry 11 pounds of ammo per person in a locked container, so we'll probably be buying the shells once we get there.

Thanks for any answers you may be able to give me or tips/suggestions that may save me some money on my trip. Looking forward to visiting. Thanks.

cannot really help you out alot....since each province has their own price structure on items....i know in ontario...you would be getting about 1.52 on return....case of 24 beer is over 30 bucks....gas around 67 cents a litre...different measure than your gallon...cigs are around 5.00 bucks a pack cdn....american money is accepted everywhere but you could get lower value depending where your at...i would suggest not bringing any ammo or hunting items across the border right now....in light of recent events....don;t hunt or fish myself, im sure others can give you a better idea.....

that's about it for now.....

edmonton is a great city

$30 there equals a little less than $20 here. More expensive, but not much.

Given the value of the $USD, you will find everything to be cheap (once converted).

Any of the big banks will have similar exchange rates. But, they will be better than hotels, fx houses, etc.

Check out American Express Travellers Checks...they are accepted and may have a better rate.

I wouldn't buy too much canadian money in the US. You will get a better exchange rate at a Canadian bank.

I have another question. How long of a delay crossing the border at Buffalo? We have a hockey tournament the weekend of Oct. 7. I have heard it could be a nightmare.

Crossing is getting faster but allow an hour and maybe a little more if you are crossing at 'primetime'..$32 for a case of our beer is O.K.as it's $20 U.S. bucks and our beer is 'real beer', not that water you guys drink(ha)..Yes, I would wait till you get into Canada and go to a BANK (we have way too many of them)to exchange your "REAL" money as alot of places won't give you a rate of $1.52 like you will at the banks...And keep your guns at home,we know you guys just love your weapons(ha)..Have lots of fun and enjoy our beautiful country ..Spanky....
