Nolan have really enjoyed reading your articles on poker and about the series. Have not found anywhere what the results were from this years WSOP. How did you do and can you fill us in on the final results?

Dunlock:

Thanks for the question.

First, let me get personal business out of the way. I did not play in the WSOP tournaments. I usually attend the event for the side action (cash games). I have gradually come to the realization that many poker tournaments are crapshoots and the high calibre of competition makes them, at best, a break even proposition -- even for many of the top players. In other words, they are a -EV activity. There is room for disagreement on this point -- only that I feel that the return on time and investment (for me) is higher in cash games.

Andy Glazer and Mike Paulle did dmost of the daily reports. However, I filled in on four of the reports. I consaider the job I did to be woefully inadequate -- as tournament reporting is not really my forte. After all, trying to make a the Ace-to-Five lowball event exciting is like describing the dynamics of paint drying.

Jack does not like the posting of links to other websites (for good reason), but if you want the daily write ups, you can go to www.pokerpages.com and hit the link to tournament results. There, they have every poker tournament archived.

I would post my own reports here, but the boredom quotient of the reportage would drive away traffic. :)

-EV activity? I've got a guess as to what that is, but I don't know. Help.

While I'm here, do you have any recommendations on the best place to play online hold 'em?

Forgive me, Nighthorse for speaking too much poker jargon and presuming everyone knows what I'm talking about. I'm going to be speaking in tongues, next. So, look out.

In poker, or any gambling activity that provides a chance for the gambler to WIN (not slots, not craps, not roulette, etc.) but sports betting, horseraces, poker, and blackjack with counting, there is a term used which is "EXPECTED VALUE." We ask, what is the expected value of a situation. The expected value can be "positive" (+EV) or "negative" (-EV). Let's say you have situation where you have 60-40 the bet of it, then you have an EV of 20 percent (you are getting 20 percent back on the investment -- according to long run results). If you are pulling the slots, and the payout is 91 percent, you have a -EV of 9 percent on each dollar going in.

When I speak of +EV, I am talking about winning money. For me (and this is not meant to brag, only to verify a point) cash games are a +EV activity. Poker tournaments are a -EV activity, except for the very small fraction of the top players (Stu Ungar would certainly enjoy a +EV factor in no-limit hold'em for example).

So, when I speak of +EV or -EV it means the expected value of the bet/wager/situation.

Thanks for asking and letting me clairrify. Perhaps this will be of interest to other readers, as well.
