I haven?t heard of this guy, nor do I know of anything like this happening.
I have very little experience in the OR, but I do know that residents work under an attending surgeon, and often do procedures/surgeries without being monitored the whole time. That?s how they learn, and naturally, when deemed competent, they can work on their own with the understanding the attending/supervising physician is available.
It sounds like this surgeon took that to a whole new level especially having concurrent surgeries taking place at different hospitals! That is truly appalling and not a safe practice UNLESS he had a partner (training completed/practicing independently) doing one of the procedures. I commonly see one cardiologist assess the patient, deem the patient needs a heart cath, and their partner performs the procedure, but this sounds different to me.
