sometimes, as just plain old hoops fans, we bettors can turn on the radio for sheer enjoyment of listening to a good basketball game and not have any money riding on it.
but as luck would have it, even when im just tryin to listen to a game for the hell of it, im still cognizant of the spread and (of course) the game/spread came right down to the final wire.
what an enjoyable, amazing game to listen to. didnt bet the game, but knew akron was a short chalk.
i had a half hour drive to where i was going, and when i got into the car- i bring in the akron game on the radio (since jets/colts gm was a blowout). as soon as i turn it on, theres a minute to go and akron is up by 7. zips announcers, obviously not the most prophetic of people, call the game over, saying zips gotta knock down a few free throws and thats it.
that is when chris williams catches fire like ive never seen (heard i guess,lol) someone catch fire before.
first he gets fouled on a 3 point attempt. nails all three.
after a bsu foul, williams nails a 3 pointer from damn near cleveland.
after another bsu foul, bsu gets ball back down 3. and williams, completely in a zone like he was all game, nails yet ANOTHER 3 to send it into overtime.
dude had 9 points in like under 40 seconds.
zips take control in overtime. bsu backers are just about done. williams incredible game about to go to waste for bsu spread bettors.
akron up 3 and at the line for 2 with 1.1 seconds left. misses the first one. zips hit the second free throw. theyre up 4 with 1.1 seconds to go.
after blowing the cover in regulation, zips backers finally get a well deserved cover, right? theres no way bsu can jam akron bettors with just 1.1 seconds and no timeouts.
wrong.
bsu hits a miracle 3 at the buzzer. but refs initially wave it off.
no basket. zips win by 4. akron bettors in the stands going nuts (id assume, lol)
then refs DO count the 3 (after initially waving it off mind you) and akron wins by 1.
having nothing on the game, i got a good laugh out of such a strange game.
akron bettors got a reaming of a lifetime. bsu bettors got a great break to start the new year.
and chris williams, even in defeat, had an AMAZING game. dude was in a zone the whole game, but especially the end of regulation and overtime.
final line for williams was 14 of 23 from the field, SIXTEEN OF SEVENTEEN from the line, hit four 3's, and finished with 48 points.
