Bullshit man! I'm sure these kids and all the others played their heart out trying to be the best.

Why not give them something to remember the effort they put out.

With you on this one. Harrison was a thug and one of the dirtiest players I ever watched, going back all the way back to his Kent State days. He would hit with the intent to injure opponents and would go far outside the rules of football to do so. I guess he has decided to hurt his kids in another way.

good for him..

ain't no such thing as free lunch..

Sounds like Harrison has a problem especially humiliating his kids by getting on his soap box. Participation certificate or trophy is not going to make or break a young kid. Tell Harrison next time they give him a game ball give it back

On the other side. I also hate participation trophies. Thankfully, my 8 and 9yo boys agree with me

its only sports

I have spoken to my kids from a young age about attacking academics, hobbies and athletics like they will eventually attack their careers, charitable efforts and even rec sports as adults. To me, there is no coincidence that a higher percentage of presidents were collegiate athletes than the general population. While every child cannot participate collegiate athletics, those who do are often devoted to their craft.

I'd have a much softer stance on the subject had Harrison stated his feelings to his kids and whomever presented the trophies prior to his kids being awarded them. To take them out of his kids hands and give them back is pretty shitty in my book.

No question about it.

So if your 10 yr. old kid comes home with a participation certificate what do you tell him/her as you're tearing it up. Do you say I'm proud of you for going to all the stupid practices, showing up to all the games, trying your best & being a good teammate BUT THAT JUST WILL NOT CUT IT !

How many of you tough guys have received participation certificates for sitting through work related seminars? You probably have them tacked on your cubicle at work.

My kids aren't interested in participation trophies. They do not attend practice seeking a trophy, they do it because they enjoy it. In their rooms, they each have their earned trophies, medals and plaques on display. In their closets they each have a slew of participation trophies in plastic storage crate . My kids aren't alone....most of their buddies are the same way. Hell, I have 6 participation trophies from summer baseball (I coach) that kids have not picked up. We lost in the semifinals, so only half the team showed up at award night. My son kept his home run over the fence trophy because he's proud that he's the only 7yo in the 7-8 league to accomplish that feat, but he placed the league participation trophy in the green bin.

I'm not aware of any kid who joins a team to just get a trophy. If true that kid needs some help. I played baseball, hockey & a little football from 10 yrs. old till I was 20 & really hated practice I just wanted to play actual game. But to be a starter I had to practice . I don't remember getting a trophy or certificate for playing on a team, made any negative or thinking I deserved it. You & the Harrison's of the world are making way to much of this plus you don't give kids much credit to know the difference between participating & winning a championship.
