I dont have numbers to back it up....just my observation and memory (which isnt all that great anymore) but teams often step up when one of their stars is out.

This is for the first game at least. It is the games after the first where the effect becomes much larger. A perfect example was Houston without Harden against Golden State. If Harden were out tonight I think there would be a bigger effect on the team and their effort.
