As a Dodger fan it is ironic that two of the more prized free agents are former Dodgers who are coming of great years and we need players EXACTLY like them at close to that performance. Adrien Beltre and Jayson Werth, lol.

Giants reach one-year, $6.5M deal with Miguel Tejada

Brian Sabean strikes again.

According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Giants have agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract with veteran infielder Miguel Tejada. The contract will also include about $500,000 in pefromance-based bonuses.

Tejada no longer has good range at shortstop and batted just .269/.312/.381 over the course of the 2010 season. Paired with hefty third baseman Pablo Sandoval, the left side of San Francisco?s infield will have some serious holes next year.

The Giants had to scramble this winter after losing both Edgar Renteria and Juan Uribe, but this looks to be irresponsible spending.

Sabean and Co. are probably done looking into trading for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.

white sox sign Dunn 4/56

wow!

Source: White Sox land Adam Dunn

The Chicago White Sox have finalized a four-year, $56 million deal with free-agent slugger Adam Dunn, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The deal is pending a physical, which is scheduled for Friday morning, and is not expected to be announced until later in the day.A baseball source said the Dunn signing does not preclude the White Sox from trying to re-sign Paul Konerko and that Dunn was attracted to the team in part by the possibility of playing in the same lineup with the veteran first baseman.

Chicago general manager Kenny Williams pursued Dunn at the trade deadline in July without success. The team also spoke to Dunn's representatives at the recent general manager meetings, sources told ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine.

Dunn, 31, ranks second in the major leagues to Albert Pujols since 2004 with 282 home runs. He hit .260 with 38 homers and 103 RBIs for the Washington Nationals last season.

Although Dunn has expressed an interest in staying in the National League and continuing to play first base, most scouts consider him better suited to the designated hitter role at this stage of his career.

The designated hitter spot was a major concern for the White Sox last season. Manager Ozzie Guillen's DH contingent hit only 18 home runs and logged a .728 aggregate OPS.

ChiSox non-tender Bobby Jenks

:0055

The Chicago White Sox made it official Thursday, non-tendering closer Bobby Jenks, who was a key part of their 2005 World Series championship team. The move had been expected since Jenks struggled with injuries that affected his performance in the second half of 2010. Jenks, who made $7.5 million last season, was in his last year of being arbitration eligible. He could have received an arbitration award in the neighborhood of $9 million in 2011.

The Sox also exercised the $2.75 million option on Alexei Ramirez, who forced the issue earlier this week when he opted out of his $1.1 million contract for 2011.

Ramirez had no intention of leaving the White Sox, but with his high-level play in recent years he knew he had the leverage to opt out of his 2011 salary to essentially more than double his earnings when the White Sox activated the option.

Ramirez led American League shortstops this past season in batting average (.282), slugging percentage (.431), home runs (18) and total bases (252). He is the first shortstop in White Sox history to win a Silver Slugger Award.

After the 2011 season, Ramirez will be finished with the four-year deal he signed before the 2008 season. But he will remain under the White Sox's control through 2013 as an arbitration-eligible player.

The White Sox also chose Thursday to not give a contract to lefty reliever Erick Threats.

Threats was 0-0 with an 0.00 ERA in 11 games before tearing a ligament in his pitching elbow on Aug. 27.

Cardinals sign Lance Berkman to one-year contract

Hoo-boy. According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Berkman got $8 million from the Cardinals.

This isn?t confirmed, but Heyman also hears that Berkman will play left field while Matt Holliday will be moved to right field. That?s right. The Cardinals are apparently moving their $120 million outfielder to make way for Berkman. By the way, Holliday has never played an inning in right field between the majors and minors. Fun times.

5:27 PM: Here?s a surprising one.

The Cardinals have signed Lance Berkman to a one-year contract, according to the team?s Twitter feed. No word on the exact terms of the deal.

Interestingly, he is described as an outfielder/first baseman in the Tweet by the team, though we can?t see him playing first base that much as long as that Albert Pujols guy has something to say about it.

Berkman is coming off a career-worst season in which he batted .248/.368/.413 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI over 481 plate appearances between the Astros and Yankees. He batted just .171/.261/.256 with one home run, five RBI and a 517 OPS over 82 at-bats against left-handed pitching.

The Athletics were aggressive in their pursuit of Berkman, but he reportedly preferred staying in the National League. A rebound season with the bat isn?t out of the question ? and he probably represents an upgrade over what the Cardinals had in right field after the Ryan Ludwick trade, at least offensively ? but it?s worth noting that Berkman hasn?t played one inning in the outfield since the 2007 season and hasn?t been a full-time outfielder since 2004. That?s quite a leap of faith to take with someone who turns 35 years old in February and needed knee surgery earlier this year.

Diamondbacks Sign Melvin Mora

Diamondbacks Sign Melvin Mora

The Diamondbacks officially signed infielder Melvin Mora to a one-year, $2MM deal today. Mora and Geoff Blum will be tasked with replacing Mark Reynolds at third base.

Mora's career found new life in the National League with the Rockies this year. He hit .285/.358/.421 in 354 plate appearances while spending time at first base, second base, third base, and left field. Mora is represented by Eric Goldschmidt.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports broke the story, with Nick Piecoro and Steve Gilbert adding details.

Padres Agree To Terms With Aaron Harang

Padres Agree To Terms With Aaron Harang

The Padres have agreed to terms with free agent right-hander Aaron Harang on a one-year deal worth $3.5MM. The contract will become official once he passes a physical.

Harang, a San Diego native, had interest in pitching for his hometown team, especially since Petco Park is pitcher friendly. The 32-year-old made 20 starts in 2010, pitching to a 5.32 ERA in 111 2/3 innings. His 2.2 K/BB ratio is solid, but not as impressive as it was from 2005-09 when Harang struck out 3.5 times as many hitters as he walked. A fly ball pitcher, Harang would likely fit well in San Diego's spacious outfield.

Bill Center of The San Diego Union-Tribune originally reported that the two sides were close to a deal while Friarhood, a fan site, confirmed the agreement. MLB.com's Corey Brock later tweeted the terms of the deal.

Source: A.J. Pierzynski almost to LA

Source: A.J. Pierzynski almost to LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers came tantalizingly close to signing free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year contract before the Chicago White Sox added a second year to their offer, resulting in Pierzynski accepting a two-year, $8 million deal to remain with the White Sox.

A source with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Dodgers were close to a deal last week that would have paid Pierzynski in excess of $4 million to join the Dodgers as the deadline neared for offering a contract to catcher Russell Martin.

Pierzynski confirmed to ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine that people had no idea how close he was to bolting the White Sox before they offered two years.

When Pierzynski ultimately signed with the White Sox, the Dodgers still wound up non-tendering Martin because they weren't willing to meet his asking price of a $5 million guarantee. The club then re-signed veteran catcher Rod Barajas to a one-year, $3.25 million contract.

The team's plan for now is that Barajas will handle the bulk of the catching in 2011 with A.J. Ellis as the backup. However, the Dodgers continue to explore the free-agent market for an additional catcher who would share time with Barajas on a roughly equal basis.

Pierzynski played for San Francisco in 2004, when Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti was the Giants' assistant GM.

I/E - have you heard anything about the Pirates from any other outlets other then the Pittsburgh Papers?

I tried looking at a couple sites and got nada. Locals are reporting a potential trade for JJ Hardy or Bartlett. And possible signing Webb or Olsen!

Thanks for your help.

Must mean the rumor of them trading Meek or Hahranhan is true. Supposedly, they will get significant return for either one. I rather keep them b/c they are pretty good.

Thanks I/E!!
