French Open Betting

by SPORTSBETTING.COM

One of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments (along with the Aussie Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open), the French Open will begin in a few days at Roland Garros in, surprise, Paris.

While many players prefer playing on natural grass, the playing surface at Roland Garros is made of clay and that can have an effect on the top ranked players.

Just because Roger Federer is the top-ranked player in the world doesn?t mean he?s the odds-on to take the tournament.

There are plenty of options offered up for the bettor?s to have a little action on the tournament.

As mentioned, Roger Federer is currently the No. 1 men?s player in the world according to the Association of Tennis Professionals? (ATP) rankings and is one of the tournament favorites but isn?t the odds-on (SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Gillette spokesman listed at +300 to win the tournament at Roland Garros) that honor belongs to Rafael Nadal.

Nadal excels on clay and has an immaculate record in Paris, which currently stands at 21-0, and an equally impressive record on clay overall with a record of 145-14.

Numbers like that have the young Spaniard listed at -250 to win his fourth French Open Men?s Singles title.

As good as Federer and Nadal are, their chances of taking home the Grand Slam this year are nil thanks to the performance of Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, which included a victory over Federer in the semifinals.

Djokovic is listed at +450.

The women?s side is a bit peculiar. Normally Justine Henin would be considered the, or one of the, top seeds but her abrupt retirement has muddled things a little.

When the tournament begins next week, Maria Sharapova will be the top seed on the women?s side.

Sharapova already has a Grand Slam event victory under her belt as she won this year?s Australian Open Women?s Singles title and she made it all the way to the semis at Roland Garros last year.

Sharapova is listed at +450 to add another 2008 Grand Slam title to her mantle.

Chances are, the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, will be among the favorites in most tournaments they are entered in and the French Open is no different.

Both sisters made it to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Australian Open with Serena losing out to Jelena Jankovic and Venus seeing defeat at the hands of Ana Ivanovic.

Venus is listed at +1000 and Serena as the odds-on fave for the Women?s Singles title at +200.

As the start of the tournament draws nearer SPORTSBETTING.COM will also offer props for matchups and first set winners.

Enjoy the weekend before the start of the French Open.
