Good question. There are only a few betting notebooks that have come to light as records. They show losses. But the fact is that he bet with the mob. And the consensus seems to be that the mob held a mortgage on him for most of his playing and managing days. Who knows what that means?
For sure he lost much more from being banned from baseball. One estimate is that he gave up about $100 mill over the decades.
