14-11-1 on year...2-2 yesterday...Another "juice" day...at 56% right now, but want to get it up to the 60% area...

Michigan -18'

The Chippewas lost Nelson (17ppg) and fellow guard Browne (7ppg). Watson and Barrett return and Spencer will join them starting. CMich lost to Northwood by 21 in exhibition play. Not a lot of experienced depth here.

Tommy Ameker's squad could suprise some poeple in the Big10 this year, IF they avoid injury (and domestic violence charges). Abram is back from shoulder surgury and will provide a very good backcourt with Harris and Horton. Amaker has stated that he wants to turn up the tempo this year and get more transition baskets. Look for the depth of Michigan and overall better talent to turn this in a rout by the second half.

UL-Lafayette +8'

The Ragin' Cajuns lost Green to the NBA, Hamilton to graduation (actually I don't know that he graduated but you know what I mean), and Wade to stupidity. Wade hired an agent before the NBA draft and lost his eligibility. Returning are Mitchell and Cameron. Mitchell transfered from Auburn a few back and is one of the best guards in the SunBelt. Cameron, a 6'11" Aussie, is back thanks to the NCAA giving another year and shows a nice touch especially for a big guy. JuCo players are the standard fill-in for UL-Laf and have worked well in the past.

The Salukis have been a force in the "Valley" for a few years now. SoIll has to deal with losing Brooks (Two time MVC POY) and Hairston. Tatum will fill in most of the guard void left by Brooks. Shaw also returns with key reserve Young. Many of the contributing bench players are back but need to step up to larger rolls.

Both teams lost key players from last year, but both teams have dealt with this almost every year. Each year, these two teams seem to be at the top of their conferences. The Salukis should get the win on their home court but it won't be easy.

Cal -4'

The Eagles have lost three starters and a few transfering reserves. Bowler is back with his 13 ppg and 6 rpg. McElhinny will have to start scoring in the DD if the Eagles are going to be competitive this year. JuCo Knaub (6'10") needs to contribute immediately as Redder (6'11") was a pretty big non factor.

Cal has been looking forward to the return of Leon Powe but will have to wait a few games longer. Sr guard Benson is also out of this contest. Midgley has the ability to contribute even more than last year (13ppg). Kately and Hardin will be counted on more as well. Smith, Ubaka and Wilkes give plenty of backcourt depth.

Even with the Cal injuries, the Bears should easily handle their hosts tonight.

ESPN Picks

TexasTech +3

I thing to remember is that teams are not as good as they looked in their last game or are they as bad as they looked in their last game. Texas Tech was embarrassed last night. The General was embarrassed. Teams have off nights and last night was the Red Raiders turn to be off.

Wake played in a closer game last night but over the course of this young season, they have not played all together well. Gray hit a bunch of treys in the final minute to keep it respectable. Turnovers will be the key tonight and look for the General to find a way to get Paul to give his team the ball for free.

Florida +4' (and rising)

Wait a bit to play this as it seems to be going up. Same logic as above. The Orange play one good game (and the way TTech shot, I think MorganSt might have had a chance to look good), and it now seems as if people have jumped aboard the Orange Bandwagon. Florida has played solidly in every game so far. All five starters are averaging DD. The bench players are also contributing. Florida gets a win tonight and a top25 place next week.

LaTech -7'

The Yale Bulldogs are expected to finish near the bottom in the Ivy this year. They will be without Martin until mid Dec. Trying to find replacements for departing Draughan and Gamboa will prove difficult.

The LaTech Bulldogs return Millsap (20ppg, 12 rpg). I could stop here but I will go on. Losing Allick and Powell will hurt but Haskins and Dean will continue to be good complements to Millsap.

If Martin was back for Yale, this game would be a lot closer. Look for LaTech to cleanup inside and run away with this one.

****LOCK OF THE WEEK*******

The Bulldogs will cover this game

*************************

Long Beach St +11'

The Rebels lose Blankson (18ppg, 8rpg), Beck(14ppg) and Bassingame (9ppg). Picking up the slack will be Umeh and Amundson, but after these two, there is little experience left to choose from. Lon Kruger is a good coach and will get the most out of his players but it may take a few games to see who is able to help contribute.

The 49ers return Hodges (13ppg) and Hawkins (11ppg, 5rpg) as well as Ibekwe (6ppg, 6rpg). Hodges has more range than the Cartwright boys on the Ponderosa. Houston, Darby and Nixon will give LBSt plenty of backcourt depth.

Too many points for the Rebels to be giving this early in the season.
