Montreal Expos @ Philadelphia Phillies

It will come as no surprise to regular readers of this newsletter that we'll be recommending the Under tonight when the Phillies host the Expos.

The everyday nature of Major League Baseball lends itself to streaks more than any other sport and right now we'll stay aboard the Expos Under train.

Montreal have gone under in eight of their nine games this season...solid pitching and non-existent offense means they have combined for an average of just 4.8 runs per game against an average posted total of 8.6. The Expos were shut out in three straight games by the Marlins and haven't scored a run now in 33 straight innings...in fact in their last seven games they have scored a total of seven runs! They had just three hits last night and have not had more than eight hits in any games this season.

We're expecting another solid start tonight from Montreal's Livan Hernandez. The 1997 World Series MVP racked up 13 outings of at least 120 pitches last season and his career average of 110.3 pitches per start is second only to Randy Johnson among active starters.

Philadelphia's offense is hardly red-hot either, averaging just 2.9 runs per game. The Phillies had lost five straight games prior to last night when they struggled against Reds starter Jose Acevedo before a late rally got them a much-needed win.

"We really looked bad today at the plate early on," Mike Lieberthal said. "It looked ugly. We got a lot of boos -- deserving."

The Phillies go with Eric Milton who is 42-26 with a 4.59 ERA since the start of the 2000 season. The left-hander should relish the opportunity of facing the anemic Expos offense.

The O/U was 2-6-1 in the nine meetings between these teams in Philly last season.

Strange things can happen in baseball but we'd be very surprised if the Expos and Phillies combined for 9+ runs tonight.
