?Friday Night Lights? NCAA Style
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
All across America Friday nights in the fall are traditionally focused on high school football. But this week the NCAA has muscled in on some of that attention, serving up a Friday Night special with a healthy dose of star power. Not only do we have two top 20 programs going head-to-head, but one of the leading Heisman candidates gets to show his stuff to the nation.
As one might expect, this battle between No. 5 West Virginia and No. 18 South Florida has attracted a lot of attention from the betting public.
QB Pat White will continue his Heisman campaign as he leads his West Virginia Mountaineers into Raymond James Stadium to fight the Bulls of South Florida. The top 5 ranked Mountaineers are looking to enact a little revenge on No. 18 South Florida as the Bulls traveled to Mountaineer Field in Morgantown and pulled off a monumental upset last year.
Underdogs by 21-points, head coach Jim Leavitt and USF handed West Virginia a 24-19 loss very late in the 2006 season and there is no doubt head coach Rich Rodriguez and his Mountaineers have stored that one into memory.
This time around SPORTSBETTING.COM lines makers are favoring WVU by a TD, with a total of 55.
The early betting action on this tilt clearly favors a cold dish of revenge being served up, as 80% of the volume is coming down on the favored Mountaineers.
West Virginia has been cruising so far in 2007 racking up a 3-1 record against the number, going 4-0 straight up in those games. The Mountaineers warmed up for the USF game by stealing the booty from East Carolina Pirate backers last week, posting a 48-7 win, easily covering the 24-point Vegas line.
The Bulls did likewise, kicking the ?Tar? out of North Carolina 37-10, paying out as 11?-point favorites.
Other games that sports bettors are wagering on heading into the weekend are:
Notre Dame at Purdue
Interestingly, this game between non-ranked teams is grabbing the attention of sports bettors, as the early wagering volume makes it one of the more popular matchups on the board for Saturday. That?s Notre Dame for you though, as they have their followers regardless of their record, and an ugly record it currently.
It might be like d?j? vu all over again for Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans. When Ty Willingham was coach he had a spectacular first year, but failed to replicate that success and was let go after three years.
Current coach Charlie Weis? luster seems to be wearing off entering his third season as well?ND is currently 0-4 SU and ATS. The Purdue Boilermakers, on the other hand, have yet to lose a game against the number sitting pretty with a 2-0-1 ATS record.
Despite ND?s struggles they are seeing 35% of the action from SPORTSBETTING.COM players, with 65% of the money going to the 22-point favorite Boilermakers.
There are no easy spots on the schedule for the Fighting Irish, who are 1-3 ATS in their last four games vs. Purdue, over the next few weeks.
No. 6 California at No. 11 Oregon
Who says the Pac-10 doesn?t get any respect? Going into their matchup this week, the Cal Golden Bears are ranked No. 6 in both the AP and Coaches poll and the Oregon Ducks are ranked No. 11 in the AP and No. 12 in the coaches.
Homefield advantage seems to be of more importance in this game as the lower ranked Ducks are listed as a 5?-point chalk and bettors are backing the host team at a 70% clip.
When these two teams met last year in Berkeley, the Bears destroyed the Ducks by a score of 45-24 but it was Cal who was the 5?-point favorite in that one. It is worth noting that California is only 1-6 ATS in their last seven trips up the coast to face Oregon.
No. 1 USC at Washington
Another Pac-10 matchup is attracting a lot of wagering volume for Saturday?s card. USC is definitely the cream of the NCAA football crop, with an undisputed No. 1 ranking across the board.
The betting public hold the USC Trojans in high regard as well as they are backing the nation?s best college team at an 85% clip. Currently favored by 21 points over the Washington Huskies, the Trojans are fresh off a win over the other team from Washington State, as they trounced the WSU Cougars by a count of 47-14 covering the 25-point spread by 8-points. The Huskies lost the UCLA Bruins last week 44-31, listed as 5-point underdogs.
