Lions vs. Jets; Preseason
Lions quarterback Joey Harrington begins his quest to hang onto his tenuous job when Detroit meets the Jets in the Meadowlands in the exhibition opener for both teams. The Jets are three-point favorites, and the total is 37. Harrington will start and could play the entire first quarter before yielding to Jeff Garcia in the second. Rookie Dan Orlovsky, a fifth-round pick out of Connecticut, is expected to play the entire second half. Quarterback Chad Pennington, who is returning from offseason shoulder surgery, will not suit up for the Jets. Former Dolphin Jay Fielder will start in his place, but he and the rest of New York?s starters are only expected to be in for about 15-20 plays. Brooks Bollinger will take over once Fiedler departs, followed by third-stringer Kevin Eakin. Recently acquired cornerback Ty Law will join Pennington in street clothes on the Jets? sidelines. Just because Ty Law was injured the Pats traded him. Not much appreciation for his part in one of the biggest upsets in SuperBowl history vs. the Rams. The Lions are 0-4 straight-up and against the number in their last four preseason road games. Overall, they?re 4-4 SU and 3-5 ATS in the last two exhibition campaigns, including 2-0 SU and ATS in the last two openers. The Jets were 3-1 (2-2 ATS) in the 2004 preseason. Herm Edwards? club has won and covered two of its last three openers. How do we see it? A toss up or toss out.
Pats vs. Bengals
Tom Brady will take the field tonight for the two-time defending champion Patriots, but he and the rest of the starters are not expected to play very long against the Bengals, who are favored by 2? points in this preseason opener. The total is pegged at 37?. Veteran Doug Flutie will replace Brady and should play the rest of the first half, with Rohan Davey going under center in the third quarter. According to reports, neither Flutie nor Davey has looked sharp in camp. However, rookie Matt Cassel, who will close things out, has been impressive. Like Brady, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is slated to play a couple of series before giving way to the trio of Jon Kitna, Casey Bramlet and second-year pro Craig Krenzel. Playing time for the reserves is unknown. Cincinnati?s injured kicker Shayne Graham likely will only be in on short kicks if at all, with recently signed Carter Warley handling long-distance chores. New England is 4-1 (4-0-1 ATS) in its last five preseason openers. However, the Pats finished the 2004 preseason just 1-3 straight-up (1-2-1 ATS) and managed a total of 20 points in the three losses, including three in a 31-3 loss at Cincinnati. The Bengals went 2-2 (1-3 ATS) last preseason, including 2-0 (1-1 ATS) at home. Marvin Lewis? team has failed to win or cover in its last two openers, though both were on the road. So how does the outcome look? It could be close at times but these are the repeat SuperBowl Champs let?s not forget that.
Bears vs. Rams
The Bears return to the field just four days after rallying to beat the Dolphins 27-24 in Monday night?s Hall of Fame Game. The game landed right on the closing three-point number. The Rams will take the field as three-point favorites. The total is 37. The line opened at ?5 Rams. Chicago, which erased a 20-7 deficit in the final 20 minutes on Monday, racked up 478 yards of total offense, with quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Chad Hutchinson combining to complete 22 of 41 passes for 376 yards. Grossman will start under center for the Bears, with Hutchinson, rookie Kyle Orton and Kurt Kittner to follow. Coach Lovie Smith did not reveal specific playing time. St. Louis is expected to go with a quarterback rotation of Marc Bulger, Jamie Martin, Jeff Smoker and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Just how much each passer will play is unknown. The Rams could be without starting cornerbacks Travis Fisher and Jerametrius Butler, both of whom are injured. Chicago was 2-2 SU and ATS in the 2004 preseason. The Bears scored just 20 points in their two road contests, though their lone win and cover on the highway came in a 13-10 victory at St. Louis in the opener. The Rams finished the exhibition slate 1-3 SU and ATS last year. Dating to 2003, they?ve lost four of their last five preseason contests, including two of three at home. Considering those stats the Bears have a very realistic shot at winning this game. Take the points.
