Here's a nice little tournament in Scottsdale, AZ. Located right next, if not right in the most dangerous city in America, Phoenix. A million and a half people in the largest single slum I ever visited, dozens of times. This is the one place I go nowhere without my .357 in my pocket. Shut up Tommy. This is not a social commentary forum, it's golf.

Not much history here, third time for the Fry's tourney. Fry's is a grocery chain morphed into an electronics chain. Smart people those Frys. Weir won the first one and Beckman won last year. Weir is the big favorite this time since no big name players entered.

The course is fairly easy, actually mostly easy. About the same as last week but without the possibility of a big number here and there. The pro who shoots 8 or 9 under on Sunday will probably win. The layout is one of those hacked out of the desert by a bulldozer deals. Artificial whoop-de-doos everywhere, man made lake, pond really, and few if any large trees or obstructions. It feels spread out, and I think it is, I like that.

My handicapping here is limited, by history, and quality of the field. I always feel that anyone could win one of these fall series events. Like last week. So I say, why bet on Weir at 15-1 when you can bet on........

Goggin to win 61.00 sia

Matt played really well the first part of this season, and maybe he will here too. He did good here last year, enough to get the full point from me. The one knock I have against Goggin is that he seems to be content just to be on the tour, and make a good living. But sooner or later he will crank it up, much like Glover did this year, and Ryan Moore is in the process of doing right now. Maybe this is the week.

I have no 72 hole M/U pick yet. Of the 8 offered, nothing really jumped out at me. It would be a straight dart throw gamble, maybe I will do it. GLAA.

Round 1 play (1pt):

George McNeill to beat Charley Hoffman +100 @ Carib
Good odds to back a player who is in good form - he shot all four rounds in the 60s and only lost out in a playoff last week - and has finished 16th and 11th in the last two years on this course; Hoffman averages two shots per round higher than McNeill at Grayhawk.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Outrights:

I couldn't even muster enough enthusiasm for a rooting interest in Spain (and with Sergio surging out of the box, it looks like my hunches toward Ignacio Garrido and Jarmo Sandelin would have crashed and burned before they even took on any oxygen).

No such problem in the desert finding a rooting interest to invest in, and I'll be fairly disappointed if I haven't at least managed to land some fleeting interest in the proceedings come Sunday:

Tim Clark(22/1) e.w.
- - I actually see that price as excellent value.

Andres Romero(40/1) e.w.
- - As soon as his name had surfaced after Friday of last week, I had it pegged as some legitimate form rather than an aberration, and I expected a one way move up the leaderboard on the weekend, and some good stuff thereafter. So far he's obliging.

Parker McLachlin(200/1) e.w.
- - As noted elsewhere, the Arizona resident had his best finish of the year (T17) in Phoenix . . . "After nearly blowing a six-shot lead when winning in Reno, McLachlin decided that he didn't have a swing to stand up under pressure so he went for the big overhaul . . . It's been a long process but he certainly seemed pleased with his progress when talking at Reno a couple of months ago . . . 'I think I've just recently started to take ownership of this new swing, and it's really started to feel like it's mine . . . So, yeah, I feel like I'm turning a corner. I feel like I'm looking forward to the last, the ending part of this year.'"

Paul Goydos(90/1) e.w.
- - I got the suggestion from a mere mention elsewhere, and my immediate response was a gentle "I like it" nodding of the head, and when it came time to pull the trigger I still liked it.

Jeff Quinney(100/1) e.w.
- - He gave me a great effort in Reno, not so much after that, and now I'm back for another taste.

David Duval(300/1) e.w.
- - I expect nothing (good) whatsoever this week, but here I be.

Mark O'Meara(25/1) e.w.
- - I totally expect him to kick down the door and nothing less, again.
