I live next to a 30 acre plot of land that has a small quarter acre pond.
The old timers that own it raised and sell miniature
horses. The kindly couple takes in unwanted ducks, geese, peacocks...the horses line up at our fence line and beg, they luv carrots.
This last very cold spell froze the pond pretty solid for a week. The horses were confined to the barn, every other animal fended for itself.
I started throwing corn over the fence for the Goose and the 15 Canadian geese that took up residency.
I saw the white goose trying to get in the frozen pond, figured he was thirsty.
I put a plastic wash-tub on the ground over the fence and made sure the water was fresh. When it froze, I just dumped out the big chunk, and re-filled it.
The white goose drank out of it and after a few days, I was able to scratch his head and stroke his long neck...I don't think anyone had ever done it, he looked at me funny, hissed a little, but decided to humor me, it must have felt good.
It is now a ritual....I now pour it over his head into the bucket.
A few days ago, the horses were let out to graze.
They would ignore "Daffy" the goose, eat his corn, and drain the water bucket.
Daffy would flap around and stay out of the horses path he was pissed, but did not want to get stomped on. This happened 3 days in a row.
This morning, I did not see the horses. I filled the bucket over Daffy's head and threw out corn.
The horses were in the corner out of my view, they suddenly came running for the water and corn, yet again...
As I went to the house, I saw Daffy take a stand.
He hopped in the wash-tub, sprawled out, and verbally told the horses what he thought of them as he madly flapped his wings.
I saw the horses come to a dead stop, two of them LOOKED at each other, and all 4 of them fled to the opposite side of the pasture.....I think they were muttering "Gosh darn, lets get out here, that crazy white monster is going to kick our butts.."
Today haven't seen the horses, its very cold, and the pond is again frozen over, I just saw Daffy and his feathered friends.
He got most all the corn and drank out the bucket all day long.
As I scratched his chin, probably my imagination, I think I saw a sly smile on his face.....
