Gamble on rule change
Mixed reaction to MP?s push for bets on single sporting events
By SCOTT TAYLOR, Ottawa Sun
A bid to allow betting on single sporting events appears to be a crapshoot with those who like to lay down wagers.
Currently, bets through Pro-Line have to be made on a minimum of three games. But a private member?s bill would amend the Criminal Code to allow for the single bets.
New Democrat MP Joe Comartin introduced the bill Friday in hopes it will divert the billion-dollar gambling industry from organized crime to government coffers.
Comartin added if the bill passes he would like it to be restricted to casinos and not corner stores.
That sounds like a good idea to Don Gregoire, who was watching a basketball game at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
He said he?d enjoy slapping a few bucks down on a game he could watch live.
?Yeah, if I came here and there was a game on I might put a bet on that,? Gregoire said. ?I don?t know if everyone here would do it, but I?m sure a lot would.?
Gregoire said he doesn?t play Pro-Line at corner stores, but would love to have a shot at individual games at the slots.
Roger Ayotte found himself on the other side of the fence. He said he puts a few bucks down on Pro-Line during the NFL season, and while only having to win a single game rather than three sounds attractive, it presents problems as well.
High stakes
?I?m not sure this would work for most people because with one game you?d have to put a lot more cash down to win any real money. You?d just have to bet way too much money.?
Pro-Line players must wager on a minimum of three games with the odds of each game combining for what is usually a decent return on a gambler?s investment.
Ayotte said he has never been to a casino and certainly wouldn?t go to make a single wager on a football game.
?Maybe the people who play the slots a lot would drive over to Quebec for one game, but I don?t think the ordinary guy would do that.?
Jeff Polsky said he?d like the odds of betting on a single game, but he won?t drive to the casino for it either. He likes the convenience of convenience stores.
?Only having to choose one game would be good for guys like me because there are so many options it can get confusing, but I wouldn?t drive very far to do it.?
For some, though, 15 minutes or so to Rideau Carleton Raceway is right on the money.
