Utes name Ratliff starting QB

08/23/2006 09:44:09 AM MDT

Quarterback Brett Ratliff has been named the starter for the Utah Utes.
Coach Kyle Whittingham said on 1320-KFAN radio on Wednesday morning that while Ratliff will start in the season opener at UCLA on Sept. 2 - as widely expected - junior Tommy Grady will serve as his backup.
"We have a great situation we've know that from the onset," Whittingham said. "To have Brett Ratliff as the starter and to have Tommy Grady waiting in the wings is a very positive situation for us. That is how we will proceed in to the UCLA game and away we go."
Ratliff helped save last season for the Utes by leading them to back-to-back victories over Brigham Young and Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl, and Whittingham

said that counted for a lot. Grady has not played a game in some 19 months, since transferring from Oklahoma.
"It was a close competition in practice but the bottom line is that Tommy has not played in a few years and very limited in what he has played so Brett is more of a proven commodity at this point," Whittingham said. "It is almost like Brett is the champion in a prize fight and you have to really, really beat the guy up to unseat him."

UCLA's Bumps and Bruises

Starting UCLA Wide Receiver Joe Cowan went down with was originally thought to be a day-to-day knee injury, but as the swelling regressed, the injury is becoming more apparent. Cowan may have a partially torn PCL, an injury which does not always require surgery to heal. His status is still unknown for the September 2nd opener versus Utah. In addition, linebacker John Hale and defensive tackle Jess Ward have been suspended by Karl Dorrell for the opener after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault charges last month. Defensive tackle Kevin Brown, who missed last year with a high ankle sprain, went down again with an ankle injury, but this time it was to his right ankle. He is expected to be ready by the season opener.
