Gators seek redemption against Seminoles

Being mere mortals prone to mistakes and bad days, athletes and coaches regularly fail to live up to expectations.

Yet the opportunity for redemption is often only a game away. Such is the beauty of sports.

Coach Urban Meyer and the No. 19 Florida Gators have an opportunity to redeem themselves Saturday when they host state rival No. 23 Florida State (3:30 p.m. ET, CBS).

The Gators are coming off an embarrassing 30-22 loss to South Carolina two weeks ago which cost them a shot at the SEC title. It was Florida?s first loss in 14 meetings with the Gamecocks dating back to 1939.

What made the loss all the more bitter, especially for Meyer, was that it came at the hands of Florida?s legendary former coach Steve Spurrier.

Spurrier coached for 12 seasons at Florida, leading the Gators to six SEC titles and a National Championship in 1997. After an unsuccessful foray in the NFL, Spurrier returned to the college ranks this year with South Carolina.

The Gators, meanwhile, snatched Meyer away from Utah, where he led the Utes to a perfect 12-0 record last season, including a victory in the Fiesta Bowl.

Amidst much fanfare, Florida signed Meyer, a college head coach for a mere four years, to a whopping seven-year, $14 million contract.

With Meyer, the Gators got off to a strong start this season winning their first four games before losing to No. 14 Alabama. Two games later they lost to No. 3 LSU, then three games after that they suffered the South Carolina humiliation.

Now 7-3 (5-3 in the SEC), Florida will be in tough against Florida St, which has an identical 7-3 record and is 5-3 in the ACC.

Meyer will once again have to match wits against a coaching legend. The Seminoles? Bobby Bowden has been calling the shots at Florida St. for 30 years and has built an unmatched record of 358-105-4. In fact, he has the most wins in Division I-A history.

Not surprisingly, Bowden is viewed by some as one of the greatest college football coaches ever.

Like Spurrier and the Gamecocks two weeks ago, when Bowden and the ?Noles take to the field on Saturday they will be underdogs - we currently have Florida listed as a 4-point chalk. Last week, the Gators were 4.5-point road favorites.

This will only be the second game all year the Seminoles have been dogs. The first time was in September against visiting Miami ? they won 10-7 as 3-point pups.

The Gators have been favored in every game this year except against LSU when they were 6-point dogs - they subsequently beat the spread in a 21-17 loss.

The Seminoles enter Saturday?s game having lost three-straight ATS and are currently 4-5 ATS on the season; Florida has lost two-straight ATS and is 4-5-1 overall.

FSU is coming off two straight-up losses to Clemson and NC State. Against the Wolfpack, the ?Noles were favored by 11.5.

Florida St.?s Drew Weatherford leads all freshmen quarterbacks in the nation with 2,440 yards. He?s also averaging the most yards per game in the ACC with 244, and he has tossed 15 TDs.

However, the 6-foot-3 Florida native also leads the ACC in interceptions with 15, and he has seen his offensive numbers drop in recent weeks as a result of mounting injuries to the FSU offensive line.

For the Gators, junior quarterback Chris Leak has passed for 2,150 yards and 16 TDs with only five interceptions. His 62.4 completion percentage is tied for top spot in the SEC.

Florida won last year?s meeting with FSU 20-13 as 7-point road dogs. The Gators now lead the all-time series 28-19-2. That said, Bobby Bowden is 17-13-1 all-time against UF during his tenure at Florida State.

The total in this game has been pegged at 48.5. The Gators are 3-7 on the OVER/UNDER; the Seminoles are 6-3.

The home team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.

Other notable games:

No. 13 Georgia at No. 20 Georgia Tech (8:00 p.m. ET, ABC)

On Saturday, SEC East champion Georgia (8-2 SU, 4-6 ATS) visits state rival Georgia Tech (7-3 SU, 5-5 ATS). We currently have the Bulldogs listed as 3.5-point road favorites.

Tech is coming off an upset win over No. 10 Miami, which was the second big upset of the year for the Yellow Jackets, who beat No. 9 Auburn in Week 1.

For the Bulldogs, Saturday?s game will be a primer for the conference championship game. Georgia will play either LSU or Auburn, depending on whether LSU (9-1) beats Arkansas (4-6) on Saturday.

No. 6 Notre Dame at Stanford (8:00 p.m. ET, ABC)

The rejuvenated Irish (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) should finish their remarkable season on high note with a win over Stanford (5-5 SU, 6-3 ATS).

The Irish, who are currently riding a four-game win streak, have beaten the Cardinal the past three years. We have Notre Dame listed as a 16.5-point road favorite.

Although the Cardinal are 1-4 SU at home this season, they are 6-1 ATS in their past seven games.
