Whats up everyone? I've been betting the NFL for several years now, and do pretty well for myself handicapping games. As a fan, I love the NHL, and I usually bet on games based on other cappers picks. This year, however, im interested in learning the basics of capping the NHL myself. Does anyone have any basic advice for capping games? For example, I love home dogs in the NFL- does the same principal apply in the NHL? What are some of the common trends? I'm just starting here, looking for any advice. Thanks a lot!!

welcome smiley...

great forum here..with a great bunch of people...

now to your ?....where do i start?????

capping pucks...well there are some angles in nhl that over the years have been consistent money makers...DUBS can give you some solid trends ...he really does his homework...

my advice to you is to watch some of the cappers in here and simply learn ...you will find some angles that work for you as well as some capping strategies .....everyone in here knows there stuff so i dont think you can go wrong reading the cappers that frequent the penalty box...

if you are a hockey follower in general i think thats a solid start...you already have some idea who are the defnsive teams and offensive teams...solid goaltenders and not so solid goalies...what teams seem to give others match-up problems...etc.

if your a cold hockey capper.. in other words someone who wnats to learn how to cap pucks but is not a follower or fan ...your pace is going to be a little slower....i have a feeling a lot of nhl cappers are either former players (myself) or just fans of hockey...neither is better than the other just think it gives people a head start...

there are some angles and trends that you may see that transcend from football to hockey...but i think hockey is very unique in regards to your capping theories...

for instance in pucks..you can have a goalie who is simply on fire and can carry a team through a very long winning streak..

in the nfl or college foots you simply cant have one guy control a game or team through out..he can have a huge impact but he cant play both side of the ball...etc..

there is so much to learn quite honestly..i would advise you to start slow..read peoples comments..make yoyur own assessments...and most of all ask questions...like i said guys in here are second to none..and im sure will be more than happy when they have the time to teel you what they are thinking..

i certainly will....

again welcome...i wish i could could give you some secret angle or sure shot trends to play...but i think you will learn as we get into the season there are no such things..some things may hit more than others but each season is a new one..and what worked last year may not work this year...

i think you said you like home dogs in the nfl..traditionally a solid angle but i think they are struggling thus far...like i said each season is different

there are some that have withstood the test of time...and yoy will see them in peoples posts this season..no doubt..

if you want some to start the season..ask DUBS...like is said..he has some solid ones..

good luck..

and again welcome to this forum..

Cooz- thanks a lot for the great reply, much appreciated. I've followed the hockey cappers here for several years, definately a ton of great info on this site. I'm gonna take a look at most of the angles and strategies posted to get a better grasp of capping games. Good luck this season!!

great points Cooz..........

and yes....if ya want stats...just ask ddubs or Tor Vig...those guys could tell you what colour underwear Tie Domi wears on gameday compared to off days :D

But for me.......there is one thing I always look at.......THE HOT GOALIE....as cooz said.....hockey is different...the goalie is everything.....ya got a hot goalie your set..........goalies are by far the most important guys on the ice.......so that's why I don't pay too much to stats :) But hey...whatever works.......

other thing I like (but don't have stats to back it up).......in the regular season if the over/under is 4.5....bet the over....if it's 6.0 bet the under :p

(I'm sure ddubs will give me the stats since the 1400's on how many turned out to be winners......but I find betting that way works!)

Kickserv, thanks for the reply. Very interesting point about the hot goalie, makes a lot of sense.

I have a ? about betting on the hot goalie....Do you bet the side and/or the total? The sides bet makes sense, but does the total rely more on the hot goalie AND the offensive potential of his team? Also, how do you statistically tell when you've found a hot goalie? How many solid performances do you need? 2 games? 5 games? Thanks a lot, really appreciate the great insight!

well here is my opinion.........

I bet the side........but if you have two goalies that are "hot" then the under is a good bet......but usually that is when you'll see the total at 4.5....so might not be worth it.......as I said....for me that interests me in the side much more then the over/under :)

as for "hot goalie"....I'd say 4 games.......or a big week.....that to me is a "hot goalie" :) Especially if he himself shut down a hot team.......

Though many on here disagree.......I love taking a bad team with a "hot goalie" on the point spread..........say Ottawa is playing Columbus and Columbus's goalie has had three quality starts.....obviously Ottawa will be favoured and by probably quite a bit...........so if Columbus is at +1.5 (-120) I'll take em :p

but as I said......guys on here don't like to take the +0.5 and +1.5 plays so ya might want to listen to them...

anyway......glad I could help....good luck to ya :p

and oh.......one more thing........if the over/under is set at 9.5 ...go with the Under :D :D

1st rule of hockey IMO
'Any team can beat any other on any given night'

Bet the dogs. Public money goes to favs and value is with the dogs.

Good luck to everyone!

I agree 100%. In other sports(MLB, NBA) the favs usually win but hokcey is different. In hockey 1 guy can't lead your team to the promise land unlike the NBA were u have 1 or 2 elite players & u just give them the ball & that team will win. Teamwork/chemistry is more important then having a few high priced superstars on your team.

Also stats aren't has important in the NHL then MLB;). Most will probably disagree. **COUGHDDUBSCOUGH**:p
99% of the time i don't use past stats to cap hockey games. I basically watch every game(including pre season) & see how the team plays against weaker teams, elite teams, road/home games, special teams, reaction on having the lead, being down early, ect...

IMHO NHL is the easiest sport to cap because there is no spread like NFL/NBA. or maybe its cuz i don't follow the other sports has closely has i do the NHL:rolleyes:

Boy, nothing like people who you consider good friends taking little jabs at you, LOL. You better watch out, cause I might get fed up of your jabs and go Mike Tyson on your asses:thefinger :bigear: , LOL.

First of all, welcome to the forum, smiley. You'll find that we have the best bunch of cappers and people in general in here than any other forum......at least of the other websites I've been to:D

Man! Where do I start. IMHO, I agree with cooz that, just by being a fan of the game of hockey, you're already ahead of the game. And I guess the best way to answer your question about capping NHL is to just look at the replies you got in this thread......which is there's really not a set way to cap this sport, much like all the other major sports. You'll find that over the season, the majority of the cappers here will end up with winning units when it's all said and done, whether it's +10Units or Over 300Units like the infamous Chenker. Everyone has his own system/technique of capping games and for the most part are successful. Cooz has the best advice of all......

"my advice to you is to watch some of the cappers in here and simply learn ...you will find some angles that work for you as well as some capping strategies .....everyone in here knows there stuff so i dont think you can go wrong reading the cappers that frequent the penalty box"

Check out Toronto-Vig's thread on his M.O., he's got some good pointers. If you decide to follow the cappers in here to start the season, pick 1 or 2 and stick with them, since most are winner in here over the long haul, you pretty much can't lose. Don't pick a dozen and try to follow them all, because you will find conflicting picks on almost all the games. Instead, when you have a question, simply ask any of us for our opinions. Kickserv thinks a "hot" goalie is someone on a win streak of 3 or more, I happen to think it's Anna Kournikova in goalie gear;) :D. But seriously, everyone in here will be more than happy to answer you.

I tried to put up some relevent trends and angles for the guys in here to chew on last yr, and I guess I've been "dubbed" the "Trend Guy":D. But it really isn't a big part of my capping, since in reality I can give you 10 trends/angles on why Det will beat Ottawa, but I can probably find another 10 trends/angles on how Ottawa will beat Det. So I wouldn't put too much weight on most of them. I do have some "gems" that I will put up as the situation arrises, and I try to alert the guys in here to be careful going the other way.

As far as taking doggy ML vs doggy PL, I think most of us already had enough debates over it that we all agree to disagree. Again, there's no set rules on how you should make your wagers, as long as you make $$$$, right??

So again, welcome, and let's make some $$$$ this season.:toast:

Oh yeah, btw, Kyle, didn't you know hockey was invented in the 1200's. Get a clue, man. You're embarrassing yourself :thefinger

Guys,

Great discussion, I appreciate the valuable input...the one thing that seems constant among everyone is that you recommend watching and studying the various strategies and ideas of the more experience cappers in this thread- i dont think I can go wrong with that advice. I'll definately be following along with some of your guys picks, and hopefully i'll have some success capping games myself...i'll definately be posting my picks here....Again, thanks for the great replies, good luck to everyone this season- lets win some $$$$$$$$$$$.....

Lock of the YEAR!!!!!

Lock of the YEAR!!!!!

Smiley - If there is one lock that I can give you is this hockey forum is not only the best in terms of picks, but you will never see people bashing others over picks. This is a great group and as of right now all I can do give a great big thumbs up because I am learning how to cap myself.

:toast: :Yep: :thumb:
