Tereshinski talks about Tereshinski

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/18/06

Joe Tereshinski had other offers and avenues. They may have been less-traveled paths for a kid from Athens, but at the end sat more certainty and quite possibly an Ivy League diploma.

He also had a Georgia drawings on his wall and a dream in his head. That's how a small-town, private-school quarterback found himself in the state's biggest arena. Now, after four years of waiting, Tereshinski is the No. 1 quarterback at Georgia. That much was settled once D.J. Shockley graduated. And nothing has changed.

Tereshinski is No. 1, but three younger players ? Blake Barnes, Joe Cox and Matthew Stafford ? have designs on the same spot. His job is to hold them off and all the while bring his team closer together through the summer months.

With opening day less than three months away, Tereshinski sat down for a chat with staff writer Carter Strickland:

? Being a quarterback means ... knowing your position, being an on-the-field commander and being a leader.

? The last thing I do before a game is ... go over my notes one more time. Just game plan preparing. You've always got to be ready; it doesn't really matter when or what part you are on the depth chart.

? The first thing I do after a game is ... hopefully celebrate with the team. I talk to my grandfather and my dad and mom. Or if Wake [Forest] is playing, I get to a TV and watch. (Joe's brother John is a tight end for the Demon Deacons.)

? The Florida game, my one career start, taught me ... how to prepare for a game really and how to use that preparation from now on.

? I would change my performance against Florida by ... I guess taking control a little more in the game. It is one thing to go in there and think about it. It is another thing to go in there and to do it.

? The spotlight is ... dreamlike.

? When I need to I lean on someone, it's usually ... my father.

?Waiting to play was ... a good experience. Playing behind David Greene and D.J. Shockley, they are great motivators and great leaders. They showed me how to win.

? Leadership means ... controlling yourself and your team through the thick and thin at all times and adapting to the situation.

? Fans can be ... a great part of the game. They really can help motivate you to do your best.

? My first snap in Sanford Stadium was ... really a dream come true. Everything I worked for happened. After that, I had to set new goals.

? My last snap at Sanford Stadium will be ... hopefully, one to remember.

? I respect and admire ... my teammates. They come in every day and do everything that is asked of them. Whether they agree or not, they are going to get it done. You look in their eyes in that huddle and you know they are going to do everything they can to get it done.

? The one thing that always makes me laugh is ... my brother. I got the serious gene.

? My greatest fear is ... haven't reached that one yet.

? Blake Barnes ... great work ethic.

?Joe Cox ... very competitive and accurate.

? Matthew Stafford ... strong arm and really competes every day. Loves the game.

........................................................

The trouble for Joe is if he plays poorly early a new QB will be in there before you can say Uuga Uuga.

This will be the first year Richt is without a QB. It will be interesting how it works out.

Georgia's been very fortunite with how the East has played out over the last 4-5 years. Tenn goes 5-6 and Florida is on their 3rd coach in 6 years.

This year will be a good test to see where Richt really stakes up.

scott...

you asked me in the "phil steele thread" about his projection for georgia in the upcoming season....

steele picks georgia to finish 2nd in the sec east behind tenn. although they have 9 returning starters from last year (fewest in sec), he thinks that based on his power ratings georgia is the most talented team in the sec east. of the 3 top teams in the east he thinks georgia has the more favorable schedule because they get to play miss. & miss.st. while tenn. or fla.both play neither. they also play tenn. at home & fla. on a neutral site.

scott...

do yourself a favor & go to barnes & noble & pick up his college football magazine for $9.00....it's money well spent.

Thanks for the info.

I was at Barnes and Noble last weekend and looked for the Phil Steele NCAA book , but they did not have it . I was pissed.

I do buy 3 or 4 college and NFL books before the season, and use them until the end of the games.

Georgia QB battle could lead to transfers
Tereshinski wants all four to stay but expects some fallout

By CARTER STRICKLAND
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/29/06

Everybody has been waiting for Mark Richt to make a decision on Georgia's starting quarterback.

The fans are ready to embrace whoever it might be. The team is ready to rally behind Joe Tereshinski, Blake Barnes, Joe Cox or Matthew Stafford.

But in all of the hype and excitement, what Richt must be ready to deal with is the fallout. One guy will get picked. Three will not.

"There is going to be a point where will have to narrow it down maybe to just one and it will be interesting to see how the young men react who aren't named the starter or in that top two," Richt said.

Tereshinski, the frontrunner to start the Sept. 2 opener against Western Kentucky, has a pretty good idea of how the losers in this quarterback battle might react.

"I would like for them all to stay," Tereshinski said when asked if he thought any might transfer. "But there are three quarterbacks back to back to back years [in college] and it would be hard, depending on what happens, for some of them to stay, I bet."

Barnes, Cox and Stafford all have multiple years of eligibility left. But Barnes and Cox have used their redshirt years.

Barnes, a sophomore, has said in the past he'd have a hard time leaving Georgia. Cox, a freshman, has said he'd have a hard time staying if he didn't get playing time.

The decision on the starting quarterback is expected to come in the latter stages of fall camp. That timeline would allow a player to transfer to another school before it started and not lose an extra semester.

Of course, they may all stay.

"You never know what is going to happen," Tereshinski said.
...............................................................................

Its really hard to beleive that 4 talented QBs would end up in this situation to begin with. These 4 could play and start for anyone in the SEC. Hope Richt makes the right decision.

Stafford and he is definitely as good as they say. He?s a monster.

The EA Sports Elite 11 QB camp? Jevon Snead, Mitch Mustain, Tim Tebow and of course Matt Stafford were all there, along with the other 7 top HS QBs in the country.

There were many superlatives given but the undisputed MVP of the whole camp went to Stafford. Staffords decision making and ability to read a defense and consistently hit the ?most? open receiver was stunning. It makes me nervous to say it but this guy is the best recruit UGA has ever had at QB.

Stafford may play in the South Carolina away game.

Spurrier will love to see him in there at QB

Plenty of questions for ACC, SEC teams

By TONY BARNHART
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/23/06

ACC

1. Is Clemson going to break fans' hearts ? again?

If that means Clemson coming up short in the ACC title race, the answer looks like "yes." Still, with 17 starters returning ? including all five offensive linemen ? this could be the Tigers' best chance to win the league since Florida State joined the league in 1992.

2. Can Bobby Bowden stand losing five games again?

No way. But he won't have to. Bowden says only two things will force him out of coaching ? poor health and losing. His health is good and there's too much talent in Tallahassee to lose a bunch.

3. Who'll start at quarterback for Virginia Tech?

Frank Beamer hopes to make a decision by the end of the first week of practice. Sophomore Sean Glennon looks like the leading candidate to replace Marcus Vick behind center.

4. Will the Georgia Tech offense be different with Patrick Nix calling the plays?

You might see a few more passes called on first down but the main offensive objective doesn't change ? get the ball to Calvin Johnson in open space. And when the defense gets obsessed with stopping Johnson, bust them up the gut with Tashard Choice.

5. Is Willie Williams really going to transfer from Miami?

Williams, rated the nation's top high school linebacker two years ago, couldn't believe he was still No. 2 on the depth chart so he quit going to offseason workouts. He wants to leave but has not found it easy. West Virginia and Tennessee and have already said thanks, but no thanks.

6. Is Miami really going to be that bad on offense?

You figure it out. No starters returning on the offensive line. The top running back (Tyrone Moss) coming off a knee injury. Six new coaches, most of them on that side of the ball. Good thing the 'Canes may have the best defense in the country.

7. After consecutive 5-6 seasons, can Ralph Friedgen turn it around at Maryland?

The Fridge has not been a happy camper lately and has shaken up his coaching staff. He'll also go back to calling the plays in hope of better results. Quarterback Sam Hollenbach (15 interceptions last season) must play better.

8. Is Ted Roof in trouble at Duke?

Having to kick starting quarterback Zack Asack off the team for plagiarism sure won't help, especially when you're 3-19 the past two seasons. But Roof, we predict, will still be back next season.

9. After four straight .500 or worse seasons, does North Carolina finally break through and win more than six?

The answer looks like yes, if one of the quarterbacks ? Joe Dailey or Cam Sexton ? can show just a little consistency. It will also help if running back Ronnie McGill stays healthy.

10. Is Wake Forest really a dark horse to go bowling?

The Demon Deacons return more starters (19) than any team in the ACC. The schedule gives Micah Andrews & Co. a realistic chance to start 4-1.

SEC

1. Where in the world is Brent Schaeffer?

The Ole Miss faithful got some bad news this week when they learned the Tennessee transfer is in California's College of the Sequoias still trying to become eligible. If he does become, he may miss the beginning of fall practice in Oxford. Ole Miss really has no Plan B at quarterback.

2. Will the Auburn academic probe affect this season?

Probably not. But it needs to get resolved in a timely fashion or it will become an issue on the recruiting trail.

3. Is Phillip Fulmer really on the hot seat?

Nope. But it would help his quality of life if the Vols beat nationally ranked California in the opener. Tennessee won't go 5-6 again but if it does, the answer to this question a year from now will be yes.

4. Who starts at quarterback for LSU?

You'd hope Les Miles won't be vague about this but we're afraid he will. JaMarcus Russell, last year's starter, is coming off surgery to his right (throwing) wrist and a separated left shoulder. Matt Flynn is coming off a career game in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Redshirt freshman Ryan Perrilloux, the nation's top high school quarterback recruit in 2005, is coming off a year on the bench. Miles needs to make a public decision.

5. Who'll get the start at quarterback for Georgia?

Mark Richt says he's got it narrowed to four. We, and the rest of the Bulldog Nation, believe that number is actually two. Georgia can win a bunch of games with Joe Tereshinski III at quarterback but the Bulldogs will likely need something from freshman Matthew Stafford if they want to repeat as SEC champs.

6. Will Tyrone Prothro be back for Alabama?

No one's ruled out a return by the talented wide receiver, who suffered a horrific leg injury against Florida last season. If Alabama hopes to match last year's offensive effort, it will need Prothro in the lineup.

7. Is Arkansas going to quit running the ball and throw it every down?

Not a chance. Under new coordinator Gus Malzahn, the Hogs will spread the defense and make it cover the entire field. But with running backs like Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, Arkansas isn't about to become Texas Tech.

8. After beating Tennessee and Florida and almost knocking off Georgia last year, can South Carolina contend for the SEC East title?

Steve Spurrier just wants to win more than he loses and for this team, 7-5 sounds just about right. The Gamecocks appear to be a year away ? maybe two ? from contender status.

9. How much will Urban Meyer use freshman quarterback Tim Tebow at Florida?

There's a lot to like about Tebow but this is Chris Leak's team. The senior is poised to have a big year in his second season running Meyer's intricate offense. Tebow will have his moments as he gets ready for 2007.

10. Vanderbilt went 5-6 with Jay Cutler at quarterback. So what happens without him?

The Commodores would be thrilled with another 5-6 season but when the first two games are with Michigan and Alabama, five wins seems unlikely.

Key Bulldog Flowers suspended 2 games

By CARTER STRICKLAND
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 08/06/06

Athens ? Thomas Flowers has been suspended for Georgia's first two games for violating unspecified team rules, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt told the Journal-Constitution Saturday night.

Flowers was listed as a first-team cornerback. He is also the Bulldogs' top punt returner.

Behind him on the depth chart at corner is a true freshman, Asher Allen. Mikey Henderson and Allen are also listed as backup punt returners.

"Some of the freshman are going to have to step up," senior defensive back Tra Battle said.

Flowers, a junior from Pebblebrook High in Austell, was moved into the starting lineup after the departure of senior cornerbacks DeMario Minter and Tim Jennings. He has played in 24 games, with no starts, and has 10 tackles and one interception.

Richt did not announce the suspension but seemed lukewarm toward Flowers when his name came up during media day earlier.

"He has got a lot of great competition," Richt said. "It will be very interesting to see where everybody lands. He is an outstanding punt returner, there is no doubt about it. But even that position is one that will be competed for.

"It is not that we don?t have confidence in him, but we want to show what these others guy can do also. He has got competition all-around."

Flowers broke open last season's win over Tennessee with a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Flowers is one of four UGA players who will start the season on suspensions. Offensive linemen Daniel Inman and Ian Smith are also out two games (Western Kentucky, South Carolina).

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe will sit out those contests, plus the UAB game.

It appears that UGA could have their hands full v. USC given the susp. and QB uncertainty.

Good thread, Scott

If some things come out with Georgia's first game with Western Kentucky and USC can win at Mississippi St , this may be a large play for me.

One of my requirements is that Joe plays almost the entire game and the Bulldogs win convinceingly. If Mark Richt is going to play musical QB's even in this game, it will hurt Joe Terenshikys confidence.

I got a list watching both these first game with interest. USC game is a Thursday night game.

Damn Im glad football is back.

Tereshinski wasn't highly recruited out of high school and has started only one game in his career, getting most of his playing time as a punt protector on the special teams. His main challenger for the job appears to be highly touted freshman Matthew Stafford, though redshirt freshman Joe Cox and sophomore Blake Barnes aren't out of the running, either.

The issue is likely to hang over the team for the next four weeks, or at least until coach Mark Richt designates a starter. Even then, he's not sure it will be totally settled until the Bulldogs actually play a game.

"We don't practice in front of 93,000 people, we don't practice on national TV, we don't let our QBs get hit in scrimmages," Richt said. "So, a lot of those things that determine whether or not a guy can handle the job won't be seen until you play a game or two."
................................................................

The QB that I believe will relieve Joe first is Stafford.
No way they keep this guy out of action. But it will really hurt the team in the long run if they let him in when Joe struggles.
Especially when they play at USC.

I doubt the other two will play but I could be wrong of course.

I guess they may all play if its a route.

Outside of experience, Joe is the worst choice of the four. If it were me, I would have the chain held tight for subbing him out.

I hope to see at least one backup get significant time during the WKU game. That is, of course, if we have padding on the scoreboard.

If Joe is still starting at QB by the end of the season, there is no middle ground. It either means we are nearly undefeated (VERY unlikely) or looking like UT last year (more likely than the first option).

this year will be very interesting to see how good richt is as a coach..because it will be the first time since richt became head coach he will have an inexperienced qb... also georgia will have 2 starters returning to the offensive line, which could hinder a young qb in his development...& losing 5 starters on the defensive side also will test richt's coaching ability.
