Am I the only one who thinks that should be an automatic goal? I mean, I know penalty kicks are usually made but still, when a player OTHER than the goalie stands in front of the net and hands it, it's obvious it was going to be a goal. I think the rule should be automatic goal in cases like that, kind of like goaltending is an automatic bucket in hoops.

I think you and those who wagered on Ghana are the only ones.

Really? The ball was going into the goal and the player, who wasn't the goalie, purposely slapped it out so that it wouldn't be a goal. It's not like he tried to head it and it accidentally hit his hand or something.

It's not really a big deal; I just found it odd that a player can basically stand in the net, slap the ball out and have it be nothing more than a penalty kick. It seems like with that kind of "penalty" soccer players must do that a lot, when given the chance.

You are right. Its a cynical play. The crazy thing is last night when ESPN was talking about dives, etc, they mentioned Suarez specifically who said that whatever could be done to win, should be. It was the refs problem to sort it out and that he would always do what ever it took with no regrets. His celebration after the kick missed was not tinged in guilt in any way.

I'm not really faulting the players, but moreso the rules. If I was a player in that situation, and I knew that slapping away an obvious game winning goal would only result in a penalty kick, I would do the same thing. I don't blame the player for keeping his team alive, I just think it's a very strange rule to not call that a goal.

Not to belabor the basketball analogy, but can you imagine if a goaltend didn't result in an automatic 2 points, but instead the player who shot the ball was given free throws as a 'penalty' to the defensive team for goaltending? Guys would be goaltending every chance they got.

Yeah, I guess I have just never seen that situation happen before. Its really bizarre. Think about it. How often is there a tie game with zero time left and a non-goalie faced with a split second decision like that? Maybe never in the WC before. To take the B Ball analogy, maybe like a obvious foul on someone about to dunk in a tie game with 3 seconds left and the defender tackles him hoping he misses the flagrent and subsecuent foul shots? Its really a hope and a prayer that he misses that penalty, like missing 4 foul shots?

Agreed. I'm sure that scenario hardly ever plays out. I was just saying that if you're the player in that scenario, it's a no-brainer of what to do. You can either handball and give the other team a penalty kick, or watch the ball go in the net and have your World Cup be over.

I think the consequences of violating the rules in any sport should be strict enough that a player has to really consider whether or not he wants to break them. Anytime a player is more than willing to break the rules based on what he knows the penalty will be, it just makes me wonder if the penalty is too lenient. Penalty kicks are made more than they are missed, but as evidenced by the shootout yesterday Ghana only went 2 for 4 on their kicks, and Uruguay missed one as well. Conversely, the ball that was handballed in front of the net by Suarez had a 100% chance of going in.

Well FIFA was talking about suspending Suarez for the rest of the tournament instead of just the semi's. I guess they changed their mind.

http://g.sports.yahoo.com/soccer/wo...-for--fbintl_ap-wcup-suarez-disciplinary.html

See, this is another thing I don't get about soccer. Why would a guy get suspended for a handball? It's against the rules, sure, but so is offsides. If he decked somebody in the face I could see a suspension, but how does somebody get suspended for a handball, even if he was obviously doing it to keep his team in the game? Weird...

He was suspended for the sending off(red card) it carries with it a one game ban.

They didn't hand down a suspension, it was already a given.
They were deciding if they would add to it.

Got it. That makes sense. Thanks.
