Good to see a coach with some Ballz! As opposed to the usual conservative play not to lose types. Plus I got Missou and don't want OT!

Yes - it was a great call because it worked.

Yes, Riley would have been bbq'ed if it failed.

But I have to agree with RB - nice to see a coach with some balls - took some big ones to make that call!

And what a Godsend to Mizzu bettors and a bittersweet win/loss for Beaver bettors.

I dont think it is "balls." Frankly I think every team should do that. One play to go 2 yards to win. Those odds have to be better than overtime - where you have to go 25 and/or stop the opponent as well?

And if you cant get two yards you dont deserve to win anyway.

I had Mizzou too so I was obviously also glad that they went for too.

That said, I don't understand why more coaches don't do this in similar situations in these bowl games. Have some faith in your players! It's not like you are playing to not be eliminated; there is no next game win or lose! With all the momentum the last thing they wanted to do was put their O head to head against Mizzou's O.

However, I will also say that Mizzou really blew it with their last possesion. At midfield, once they lost yardage on 1st down they throw on 2nd and 3rd down. WTF?!? The 3rd down play didn't really hurt them since it was complete, but the 2nd down play was an opportunity to take another 25 ticks off the clock or force OSU to use another timeout. I know that OSU scored with 22 secs left but think the game would have been quite a bit different had they not had the extra time. Just don't understand why coaches keep giving the other team more chances rather than just run the ball up the middle and take time off the clock.

This is simple.

You WOULD see more coaches do it in college or pro ball IF it was the right move.

Balsy call no doubt. But it's gonna fail more often than not. Even if it was successful, it would not go by unnoticed long and would be game planned more for (IE Bears running back short missed fg attempts successfully)

disagree....two pt conversion rates are fairly high and in this situation it guarantees you a win

vs the other scenario

kick the pat and tie the game (in college the chances of missing the pat are about 5-10%....see the clemson game for proof)

after that the game heads into ot where it's probably a 50-50 prop

thus.....going for 2 at approx a 45% success rate = the pat option and ot

yet, its rarely done......it should always be done by the underdog-undermanned-road team as you would think they are at a disadvantage in ot

and for the record......in college on a 2 pt conversion they need 3 yards not 2.

Yes, the 2 pointer requires 3 yards which is why the run is dicey. I think the reason more coaches don't do it is the simple fact that the defeat will be blamed squarely on their shoulders. In that sense it does take some nuts to go for it. But as gjn23 said, it makes some sense to do it. Guess you have to be pretty sure of the security of your job.

yep...in the end all coaches are chicken shit and can always lay blame with the players (in a round about way) instead of dealing with the direct heat of making a 50-50 decision that may fail and "lead to the loss"

"well it was a great comeback, we tied the game up but couldnt get it done in ot"

basically that says i made the right choice by tying the game dont blame me the players lost the game in ot

as opposed to saying

"yeah i thought with the way our offense was moving on their defense there was no way we they could stop us on the 2 pt conversion.....we didnt make the play and we lost but id make the same decision again"

now the coach is responsible for the loss

very few will take that reponsibility,

you guys are probably right (definitely right about the undermanned/under talented angle)

Steve Stone likes to always bring up a certain point....

He's always been amazed at pro baseball players sliding into 1st in an attempt to beat the tag.

"If that was possible, Olympic athletes would slide across the finish line instead of running through."

Just because something may be the correct thing to do, doesn't mean it's always going to be done.

Steve Stone is right on that one. Going for 2 is the right call as well but generally speaking coaches are pussies.

I am concerned though that GJN agreed with me on this. That makes 3 or 4 times this year....perhaps the Apocalypse is upon us.

Intense,

The worst is coaches who punt on 4th and anything less than 6 inside the opponents 40. If you want to see a coach with Big Ballz, get ready in the Championship game cause Urban Meyer will take multiple chances. Remember the fake punt against Iowa last year. He did it all the time at Utah. One thing it does is let your team know you have confidence in em. Anyway, I dont' think anyone roasted Tom Osborne in the Championship game where his team failed on the 2 pointer. Maybe some Nebraska fans can weigh in.

In a meaningless game he goes for 2 ............lets see him do the same thing when the Pac10 title is a stake or something is really on the line........

those coaches are bad....but not as bad as the ones who punt with 4-5 mins left and down 2 scores..........how many fking possessions do they think they are gonna get in 4 mins???
