OK, I know you all will think this is a ridiculous question, but I have been curious about it so I am going to ask because people here are very knowledgeable for the most part. When people say they have handicapped a game, what exactly does that mean? For example, every game I bet on I research as much as I can, from several different sources and what not. Is that handicapping a game, or is there like a method to go about handicapping correctly? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

It varies from person to person. Sometimes I think some people's "handicapping" is sitting on their ass looking at lines.

I can only speak for myself, but most of it is recent box scores. Some is local media reports, some is watching previous games (I try not to do too much of that) and some is looking for long term angles that are applicable. Once all of that is done, I usually look at the line histories on Best Bettor and make sure that my line has "value". Basically I want to make sure I am within 10 cents of the best previously available line on a moneyline sport or within 1 point of the best previously available line on a spread sport. Hope that helps.

Everyone has their own style - but as long as their is some method to your madness I would consider it handicapping.

I agree with Nick that box scores are big. You can find numbers and stats within the game that do not neccessarily reflect the final score. Rebounding stats, FT %'s, turnovers, etc....

Handicapping can be anything - as long as you are putting in the legwork needed to find some solid plays. I try to find articles from local newspapers that might give you a glimpse of what's going on inside a teams locker room, as well as crunching the numbers.

Everyone's got their own system - just have to find what's best for you.

Nick, thanks a lot. That is basically what I do to some extent. I definitely don't just look at the line and make a bet. You lost me a bit though when you said you look on Best Bettor to make sure your line has "value". What exactly does that mean?

Handicapping is the term used to describe the analysis of the impending matchup. It is the method of trying to identify some recent angle, previous trend, in game statistic...something...anything (in most cases, based on reason and logic) which would indicate a decided advantage and therefore point to the probable side.

On www.bestbettor.com you can look at line histories. If a line is at, say -7.5 and it was available at -5 or -6 earlier in the day, I will usually pass on that game even if I like it at -7.5. I feel over the long haul it is too tough to overcome the loss of that line value if it has already moved a bit.
