Always liked him a lot, RIP

I was at the '85 game in Columbus when the Hawkeyes were number 1 with Chuck Long and Harmon. It was played in a freaking monsoon and somehow the Bucks took them down. Although there were a few turnovers on both sides, the atmosphere was electric and it was probably the best sporting event I ever attended.

Hayden turned the Iowa Hawkeye Football program around right away when he got to Iowa City.

My uncle was the head librarian at Iowa in the 60's and 70's and had season tickets. My Dad and I would make the long journey to Iowa City for many years. They were very bad for a long time.

I can remember one game Iowa did not get across the 50 yard line.

Look at the coaches and their records from 1960 up until Hayden took over.

Burns 16-27
Nagel 15-21
Lauterbur 4-28
Commings 17-38

Hayden took Iowa to the Rose Bowl in his 3rd year at Iowa.

I got to meet him a couple of times and he was just a normal guy.

RIP Hayden

I was a junior at Iowa during that ?85 season. Had student season tickets on the 40 yard line half way up. Imagine a school putting students in that section today :mj07:
Number 1 iowa and Hayden Fry hosting number 2 Michigan and Bo Schembechler.
Chuck long and Ronnie Harmon and a fierce defense against QB Jim Harbaugh and an equally tough Michigan defense.
Last play of the game, Iowa?s kicker nails a FG to give the Hawkeyes a 12-10 win. Me and 40000 of my closest friends storm the field to celebrate and the goal posts came down.
I?ve been fortunate to have attended a lot of college and pro sporting events, but as long as I live nothing will ever top that game for me.
Had the pleasure of meeting Hayden several times and getting to have drinks with him on one of those occasions.
He was the same guy as you saw interviewed on TV. Had that unique knack of making everyone in the room feel like you were his best friend.
R.I.P., coach, you were one of a kind and iowa football fans can?t thank you enough for your contributions to the program.

When I built my poker room in my home in Wisconsin, a 24 x 20 room with two poker tables in it I painted the room pink in honor of Hayden as he painted the visitor locker room pink at the University. All the guys from Wisconsin that played poker in the room hated it and I kept it pink for seven years because of it until I sold the house.
