Els a 7/1

LAS VEGAS ? The PGA Tour may be experiencing a hangover after another successful Masters tournament. It is always hard to follow a marquee sporting event, especially when many of the big name players are taking the week off. The Heritage has the dubious distinction of hosting a golf tournament the week after the biggest stop on tour.

Oddsmakers at Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Ernie Els as a 7/1 selection to win The Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The ?field? enters the fray at 7/5.

?Ernie Els played well at the Masters after starting slow, plus he is a marquee name,? stated LVSC oddsmaker Jason Been. ?The ?field? has a lot of solid players that have a chance, especially since some of the big names are not playing.?

Notable golfers that are taking this week off to recover from the Masters include Tiger Woods, Mike Weir, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia. That makes this tournament pretty wide open.

?This week is ripe for inconsistent play after the emotions of the Masters,? noted Been. ?That, coupled with the effect of playing 36 holes on Friday should make the opening round for this tournament pretty interesting.?

Davis Love III is right behind Els at 10/1, while Jim Furyk is 15/1 and Stewart Cink and Justin Leonard both entertain 20/1 odds. Leonard is the defending champion, while Davis Love III has won the Heritage four times. Masters runner-up Len Mattiace has been installed at 35/1 to hoist Sunday?s trophy.

?Davis Love III has enjoyed quite a bit of success on this course,? said Been. ?Mattiace is listed just because of his performance last weekend, otherwise he would probably be in the ?field.??

To spice up the usual betting options, LVSC has also released some matchup wagering. You can bet on a certain golfer to beat another in head-to-head competition, as opposed to who will win the tournament.

One intriguing matchup pits Cink versus Leonard, with Leonard listed as a slight $1.20 favorite (bet $120 to win $100). Cink is listed as the ?even? money underdog (bet $100 to win $100).
