A massive betting sting opposing an injured tennis player has resulted in a bookmaker amending their tennis rule from 'ball served' to 'match must be completed' today. It all happened yesterday (Monday) when so-called 'smart' money started arriving for Xavier Malisse to beat Hicham Arazi in a first round match in Barcelona. Sportodds were forced to cut Malisse from 1.75 to 1.50 after taking early money for Arazi. Arazi went on to lose the first set and retire shortly after. The official ATP website lists an abdominal injury or stomach muscle as the reason for retirement.

The Sydney-based punter who kicked off the plunge is known to be well connected to several ATP players. He places his wager first, and then notifies others who place wagers from several other client accounts. Canberra-based Sportodds reacted today by amending their tennis rule which now requires a match to be completed for bets to stand. A Centrebet spokesman declined to reveal the identity of the punter in question, except to say that he has close to a 100% record when he bets.

The tennis rule varies across the bookmaking industry. Centrebet, SportsTAB and Olympic Sports still require just one ball to be served, SportingOdds and Bet365 require a set to be completed while the likes of William Hill, Victor Chandler, Sportingbet Australia and now Sportodds all require the match to be completed.

Interesting stuff huh

I like prefer the rule that sportodds are now using and will start using them for tennis from now on. Unfortunately ive been on the wrong end of a few costly retirements over the years and wish all my books would bring in this rule. :yup

keep in mind.......odds are different at books that say "match completed" as opposed to books that say "one point must be played"

and we always seem to remember the times ssomebody retires and we lose.......seem to forget when we win that way

I thought about that but from the books I use, SportOdds still seem pretty good value. Good point about the retirements but I still prefer the safety of the bet being void as long as the odds are comparable to the other books.
