Oklahoma State would be a better NFL betting option than Detroit or St. Louis right now, but forget the pros, they'll have a hard enough time getting out of the Big 12 alive. The Cowboys suffered a late-season slump in 2008 due to a terrible defense, and that's the only thing that will stop them this year.

The offense returns eight players from last year's explosive unit that was sixth in the nation, and it was very balanced, averaging around 245 yards on the ground and through the air. Zac Robinson is going into his third year as the starting quarterback, and he was the fifth-rated passer in the country. Kendall Hunter was sixth in the NCAA in rushing, and there are three starters back up front, which means a possiblility of a bigger season. A second receiver will have to step to replace tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who was a first-round pick in the draft. Kez Bryant is one of the best receivers going, but he'll need someone to minimize the double-teams that he'll face.

The defense brings back six players, but they may want to forget about 2008 as the Cowboys were 93rd in the nation. The entire linebacking core returns and they're all seniors, led by Andre Sexton. The secondary could be in trouble, which isn't good news in the Big 12, and the Cowboys were 107th in sacks last year, which needs to be improved on if the Cowboys want to overcome the odds in your handicapping software.

The Cowboys open the season with a big home game against Georgia, and they host Missouri and Texas in October. In November, they'll look to avenge a beating they took at Texas Tech in 2008, but all eyes will be on November 28th, when the Cowboys head to Oklahoma for another edition of the "Bedlam" series. Oklahoma State has lost six in a row to Oklahoma, and they haven't won in Norman since 2001.

NCAA football betting odds have the Cowboys at +800 to win the Big 12, and +2800 to win the national title. Oklahoma State's problem is that they play in the difficult Big 12 South with Texas and Oklahoma, and if they're going to come away with the crown, they'll have to go through these two. Bill Young is the new offensive coordinator, and he did an excellent job at Miami. If the defense is only 30% improved from last year, don't be surprised to see Oklahoma state among your weekly football picks.
