the 1-1.5 is the "eastern puck line". It is a way of giving the odds solely in the form of a goal spread.

so monday Ott is -1, Toronto is +.5 on the eastern puck line. Toronto the underdog, only favored by a half puck--Ott by a full one.

But you normally bet the combination or "Canadian Line" and Ott is -.5 -105: A spread and a moneyline.

Or you bet a straight moneyline, like in baseball. Ott is -150.

They show the old eastern line 'cause that's the way most newspapers list it and old hockey bettors (all east coast) used to bet it. You get even money, minus vig, if you bet it. But you can't bet it anymore, from any legal outfit anyway. They use the moneyline and/or combination line because it is more adaptable to change.

Ott is -.5 -105 Monday, and NJ is -.5 -130. But both are -1 on eastern line. You can have finer gradations in betting lines using a moneyline. Books like that.

Old baseball lines are even more complicated, they got several of them!

Why newspapers still list lines using this ancient crap, I have no idea. Won't find the newspapers in Las Vegas doing it!

I hope this helps, and anyone out there corrects my mistakes.
