Why aren't there any 'rebel forces/militias' that try to overrun our government like there are in other countries? In other words, what makes our government so stable that it does not have these types of groups 'attacking' them?

The fact that our military or any local police force would crush them?

In LDCs, rebels can stage coups for a number of reasons. One is that the size of rebel armies is often the same as the size of the national army. No chance of that here. In LDC case studies like this, rebels often have a number of people on the "inside". Again, not much of a chance the militia faction in this country has significant pull in the White House.

Lots of other reasons but mostly based on these.

Besides that ..... this nation is full of gun-owning rednecks who would relish the opportunity of defending our government

I am playing the devils advocate here...but if there are so many gun toting americans then what is to say that a group of them band together and form their own army....

What i am getting at is what, over time in our nations history, has made our government so impenitrible?

Sure lots of them have their own groups, their called militias. I dont know the numbers but I assume some of the larger ones have hundreds or more members. But just the sheer size of the country and area over which people are spread out makes me think it would be hard for people to band together to say form a rebel army with 100k members.

I assume that yes, they could take over, say a smaller government office building or installation. But could they stand up to say a counter-assault by Delta or similar outfit?

One "daisy cutter" would make them rethink ideas.

Redfish, are all gun owners "rednecks" in your eyes??????? I own several guns but have never been called a redneck. Let me know if I should add this title to my name!!!!

Crunch..daisy cutter..pls explain...

And guys...I am trying to get at why we have such a strong govt. compared to other countries....what makes us so different?
Is our government that 'good' that no one would attempt a coup?
If so, what has led to this formation of an inpenetrable govt.?

Captain Crunch --- No, just because you own a gun does not mean you're a RN, I was implying that if this event ever occurred on a local basis, that the RN's would probably respond 10 times faster than police or military and without consideration of being "Political Correct".

pacerfan - I agree with others here that it just simply comes down to numbers and training. Even if a militia were to garner some 100k in membership, the US military would still not have much of a problem taking care of them. The militia might have automatic weapons and even some small explosives, but the US military has highly trained units such as the Army Rangers and Navy Seals - not to mention stealth fighters, stealth bombers, the Marine Corps, top of the line tanks, etc.

Also, I don't think there are that many people in this country that are so disgruntled with our government that they would be willing to take up arms and attempt a coup. Just my .02.

By the way Cap Crunch, great site you linked to. Very informative.

Redfish, I feel better now. LOL I am an avid hunter and catch grief all the time for being a bambi killer. I hunt within the regulations and I eat what I harvest. It is all in the name of conservation. I was pretty sure I knew what you meant in your first post about the rednecks but thought I would make sure. I agree that if something did happen in the US, you would have every weekend warrior in the nation taking it upon themselves to protect our country. I think that is what you were driving at. Good Luck

Don't know who you are talking to, but I remember them just fine, and I don't appreciate the implication that you are making. Besides, they don't really have anything to do with what we are talking about. Of course there are some people that will do extreme things like that because of their discontent with the government, but my point is those people are few and far between.

Billy,

Just as we cannot forget about 9/11,it is just as impotant to remember Oklahoma City. That was a terrorist attack also.Maybe one day the authorities may be able to proove that outside forces helped in those murders.

I still don't really understand the point of you bringing this up, to be perfectly honest. Pacerfan was asking about the notion of militias and all out assaults on the government in an attempt to overthrow the goverment and install a new one. Of course I haven't forgotten about Oklahoma City, I doubt anyone on this board has. The Oklahoma City bombing, tragic as it was, was not an attempt to remove the current goverment and install a new one in its place.

Not trying to get in a big pissing match or anything. Just don't really understand what you are getting at here.

2 reasons, the strength of our military and the CIA/FBI. I'm sure most people who would seriously lean in that direction probably would get framed or legitimately nailed for some crime and end up rotting in jail. Or in the case of a large militia group led by Louis Beam, sued and caused to disband by Morris Dees.
